Registration Nightmare Continues

Ivan Mascovich

My system has hardware problems. I pull drives and the IDE controller out
to test them one by one and then I get a gift from Bill: Windows demanding
to be reregistered.

Then I can't find my slip of paper with the registration key on it.

After two days of searching (and not getting work on the computer done) I
find the original installaton instructions.

I keep searching and finally, find the original holograph copy of the
registration key.

So type in the key number.
....Click on next.

And the #$#%#$# thing tells me that I have entered an invalid key.

I double check and it is exactly like on the official paper.

I retype it repeatedly and every time Bill says it's invalid.

What do you do?

Look closely, S-5, B-8, O-0, I-1 and others look alike.
Have someone else try, sometimes another set of eyes and fingers can get it.

Are you sure the key you are using is for the particular CD you used?
There are many different kinds and they are usually not compatible.

I only have one computer so it has to be the same. Now I have one day left
(it only gave me just 3) and I'm about to get locked out. I have not
isolated the hardward problem.

One top of that, I will probably have to go through all of this nonsense
again when I put the machine back together.

I probably should contact John Dvorak or some other writer to give them
grist for a column.

Have you tried to activate by Phone? It's a simple process.

I ended up buying a new copy. Re-installing and entering the new activation
key.

I'm not a happy camper. Both my keys may be posted to the internet shortly.
