regedit won't run in windows folder

C:/Windows/regedit ceased to function. Got error: "the application failed
to initialize properly (0xC0000005), click OK to terminate application."
Then plagued with Adware; used Spyware Doctor, NotronAntivirus, Microsoft
beta antispyware, which removed randomly generated strange file names.
Symantec said to remove and edit the registry keys. Now regedit in
Windowswon't run from explorer or command prompt, however, will run from I386
or system32 and run regedit files thtey will run from either the command
prompt or windows explorer. the file versions of the regedit files are
identical. If you delete the regedit in windows folder and go to I386 where
you have a working executable regedit and you copy that regedit back to
windows folder it becomes non executable. Symantec suggested a tool called
"unhookexe.inf" to restore some registry keys back to default values. The
fix targets registry six strings in HKLM as well as in other HK string
(values too long to list here, but contain many """",,,,%%%%). does anyone
know why regedit in windows folder won't execute.

FOUND a fix!

problem fixed on my system...

did this

START - RUN
type cmd
then Type in the screen SFC /scannow

(may or may not need XP cd in the drive)

I didn't need it on my compaq

SFC System File checker will repair any bad system files!

NOTE I did have to re-intstall the driver for my graphics card after the fix. As my system went to 8 colors after restart. (was pretty easy)

You can always use system restore if you have problem, but if you restore after the fix the errror will come back too...
