refreshing XP

My XP pro seems to be corrupt .. I can no longer run searches, use Nero,
access the control panel etc without getting the 'program is not responding'
message. this is becoming more and more frequent. Is ther any way that I can
reload XP or refresh it or repair without losing my media files or having to
go for a full re-install? if i have to go for the full reinstall. what files
do I need to locate and save elsewhere then replace to keep my 1500+
playlists in WMP9 .. sorting them out again would be a major task. Where I
live we expect at least 2 power cuts a day ... could this be the cause?

If you are having power cuts every day that cause your PC to shut down
unexpectedly, that can be causing your problem. I'd recommend getting
a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) that includes the ability to do a
controlled shut down of the PC when the battery gets to low.

You can do a repair install to reload Windows without loosing your
data or applications.

Most definitely. Have you considered purchasing a UPS to provide your
PC with back-up battery power for long enough to perform a graceful
shutdown?

I concur with all of the above. It is crazy not to have a UPS under your
conditions. You can buy them inexpensively these days.
