Hi,
A friend crashed his computer. It is a Dell Demensia with windows
home edition. He has all the Dell disks that came with his computer.
I know that Dell does not provide a XP full program disk. It is on
lots of separate disks .
Have a happy New Year!
Thanks in advance

Not really. Dell provides a disk that will restore the machine to its
original software configuration. Any programs you've installed, any
drivers you've installed, any data you've stored on the machine will
be wiped away. It does not supply an actual WinXP system disk. I don't
think there's a way to do a "repair install" from what they give you,
but I'm not 100% sure about that.

depending on what came with the computer, some came with a restore disk
other came with a driver disk and a complete xp disk. If you have the xp
disk, boot from the cdrom and follow the instructions. My laptop came with
the drivers on one disk and xp cd on another.

Then say that in the body of the post!

If you have only a recovery CD then you have several options. Boot from a
W98 Floppy , use FDisk, delete the non-FAT32 partition and format from
there. Or, make a BartPE bootable Windows XP CD and do it from there. Or,
download a Linux CD such as Ubuntu or PCLinuxOS and use that to do the job.
May I ask what the purpose of the excercise is?

Hi,
The true purpose is that there is a virus-worm eating\causing
pop-ups all the time. He tried HiJack this- virus scan( Verizon
Internet Security Suit) and Ad Aware Se to remove unwanted things from
the computer.
Some one sent a e mail and he did not know the sender. But he opened
it anyway and that started all his problems from that point on.
So after 1 month of Verizon trying to help him. Now all he wants to do
is start from scratch. I am only trying to help him accomplish the
task he presented to me. Help him restore his computer like Dell just
sent it to his home.(Factory settings). I hope that I spelled
everything out for you GORDON!

Thank you. Then just use the Dell-supplied method of system recovery. Easy.

Getting snotty won't get you more help. If you can't work with Gordon's

I know that Dell does not provide a XP full program disk. It is on
lots of separate disks .

First - it's 'Dimension' - see it around the power button - for the exact
model number, etc.
If he has the 'Dell disks' - as you say - he should be able to restore his
system to the 'shipped' state by using those.

It also came with instructions and Dell would have them online:
http://support.dell.com/support/top...1A&journalid=497058C7975711DBB4225D60633A6D93

Follow the pull-downs and answer the questions to get steps. If you just
want to format and start over for whatever reason - answer accordingly.

Dell *does* provide an 'XP full program disk' if you pay attention when you
order it and ask for said disk ($10 I think..) and you may be able to call
Dell Technical support and order said disk (likely more than $10 now) for
your Dell computer.

Unless Dell has changed very recently, I believe they still provide a real
OEM Windows XP installation CD for an additional $10 if you order it with
the computer. It's well worth it, in my view.

Hi,
Sorry you only get the blue CD set. The Dell Red one is worth $300.00
before taxes!
Just wanted to let you know.
Have a Happy New Year!

Please read more carefully what was said...
*'...if you order it with the computer...'

You are speaking of 'after the fact' - if you order the CD with the system,
you get it inexpensively. Also if your system is still under warranty and
you request it - there *may* be a discounted price. As for the color of the
CD - not that it matters - everyone I have gotten (in the hundreds at
least - probably the thousands actually) has been blue and an actual Windows
XP installation CD - Dell OEM version.

The situation you are in may be unique - as you mentioned 'refurbished' and
never statged how long ago it was purchased nor if it is under warranty any
longer. Also - I have given you an alternative to get a new OEM Windows XP
Professional installation CD/License for $150 in another response... That
is your best option at this point after your phone call.
