I accidentally reduced my photos to smaller sizing and want to revert back to
the original file size. Is there a way to do this for a file folder? H E L

If you mean by "smaller size" just reducing the pixels per inch to reduce
the size of print, then nothing needs to be done. If, however, you mean by
"smaller size" reducimg the number of pixels in the file, you made an
irreversible change.

Jim ...

I think it may have been the number of pixels in the file but I am unsure.
After reducing, all my pictures are smaller and when I try to enlarge them
they are grainy. I thought there might be a way to restore a file folder to
a previous date ... at least that was what I was hoping for.

Thanks for your response! Eva

Just wondering if you can recall the exact
steps you used when you resized the
original files?

Ok...the pictures are in your My Pictures
folder and you are running Windows XP.

If you resized your original files and did
not retain backup copies...there is no
way I'm aware of to recover your unedited
files.

You can resample (adding pixels) your images using the free software
irfanview:
www.irfanview.com
Certainly not the same as getting your original back but this may help. To
do this, first make a copy of one of your file and try it and see what you
get.

To avoid this problem, use the image resizer given below. It will resize
your photo files and add the resized files in your folder but will not
delete your original files.

Once in your folder, double click on it to install it.

Once installed, you right click on a photo file (or on a group of selected
photo files).

Click on Resize image on the opening menu.

A window will open, select the size you want.

New files will be added in your folder, same name as original file but with
the word (small) or (custom) added.

The first time you use it, you may not see Resize image on the opening menu
after you right click on a photo file or if you see it and click on it, it
may not work. If so, do the following:

Click on Run, click on Start and type the following in the textbox:

REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL, etc.

Go to this site and download the free Image Resizer. Exe file in one of your
folder.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/pow

and press the Enter key.

Note that there is a space between ...32 and SHI. Image Resizing

Also, you can download a free photo editing software from here to resize
pictures and edit photos:

http://irfanview.com/

or another free software:

www.faststone.org

From this last one, you can directly e-mail a picture and it will
automatically resize it but will not change your original file.

John ...

Thanks for your response! No, unfortunately I dont remember the steps but I
believe I was using MS Office Picture Manager.

There is a website on "Restoring Data" for which I tried to follow the
directions they offered. However, some of the instructions were not
selections for me and I assume possibly because of different versions of
Windows but I am unsure. Some of the selections not available to me were the
tab "Previous Versions" and the "Restore" button. I use XP Home Edition. I
include the website link:

Sounds like your original pictures are
not recoverable.

In many cases..."deleted" files can
be recovered but files that have been
replaced *overwritten* like your pictures
are gone.

Windows Vista has an option to restore
previous versions of files....WinXP does not.

Certainly not the same as getting your original back but this may help. To
do this, first make a copy of one of your file and try it and see what you
get.

Note, however, that resizing with a good interpolator will get rid
of the "blockiness" of "enlarged" pictures, but the blockiness will
be replaced by an equivalent blurriness.

The missing detail is, unfortunately, gone forever.
To avoid this problem, use the image resizer given below. It will resize
your photo files and add the resized files in your folder but will not
delete your original files.

This is the critical point about any photo edits: *never* overwrite
the original photo. *Always* create a new file, preferably with a new
name that contains the name of the original file(s) and the edits done.
Once in your folder, double click on it to install it.

Once installed, you right click on a photo file (or on a group of selected
photo files).

Click on Resize image on the opening menu.

A window will open, select the size you want.
