Recycling bin does not work

When i delete files they are deleted... for good. I check the settings on my
recycling bin by right clicking it and going to properties, all setting are
fine. I also tried opening it and dragging a shortcut in the window, it asked
if i wanted to delete it, i said yes and it was gone. I had some trouble a
while back with nortons recycle bin and i got rid norton all together and
went with avast. I think it was since then that my recyle bin hasn't worked
but all reminance of norton is gone registry and all. Im clueless so any help
would be appreciated. Oh and i just reinstalled windows... not as in
reformatting my hard drive and installing but just upgrading it. Thought it
might work but no use.

I'll bet 100 - 1 that your registry isn't entirely 100% clean of NSW or any
Norton/Symantec application for that matter that was ever installed.

Symantecs NIS 2005 placed more than 1700 entries in the registry the last time
I ran compare before and after install. Not only was it a registry hog, it also
shared files with other apps. I used 2 apps to compare the before/after, Total
Uninstall and RegShot. I used RegShot to get the first shot before using TU
during the entire install, reboot and all. I then took the second shot and
compared the two with RS, what a smack in the face seeing the amount of entries
placed in the registry. I then used Total Uninstall to remove NIS, which
promptly took a few other apps down the road with it.

Pulled out the big guns, ran Registry Commander and searched for NIS, NAV,
Norton, Symantec, and any word related. RC promptly slapped me in the face by
disclosing many left behind entries.

Run a reg search using the many different names you can think of that even
remotely match any Symantec app you had installed, you'll find plenty still
lingering around.

As well, have a look in:
c:\program files\common files\symantec
c:\documents and settings\all usres folder\application data\symantec
c:\documents and settings\your user folder\application data\symantec
c:\documents and settings\network service folder\application data\symantec

May as well do a search on the entire drive, as you can see Symantec does not
favor the registry alone.

If you find that there is more than you figured on, see:

Thanks Brian for the info and Plato for the link. I'll do a real good sweep
of the registry and get back here with what happens

Okay well i tried every version of the norton removal tools on Palto's link.
I ran registery commander and searched for NIS, NAV, Norton, and Symantec in
the entire registry, no matches. I did find some left over stuff in the
spplication data folders so i got rid of those. I restarted my computer and
its still messed up i really dont want to reformat my computer for this
recycling bin but it would be nice to have it work. Thanks for the help guy
but any other suggestions will help. My last resort is bothering other people

Norton SystemWorks (and other Norton products) add it's own Norton Protected
Recycle Bin to your system. This catches "every" file you delete, whereas
the normal recycle bin will NOT. You are just used to the extra protection
you used to have, and now you've removed it.
