recycler folder

My PC has a folder in c: drive called Recycler. I suspect it contains
a virus. It can be seen when I used AVG to scan it. It cannot however
be seen when I use Explorer. I am using Win XP. But AVG cannot detect
it as a virus. Everytime I slot in my thumb drive, it will fail to
open when I click on the f: drive that is my thumb drive. It can open
once only on first insertion but after that, the PC will ask for a
program to open it whenever I double click on the f: drive.

I have tried to use several removal tools - Microsoft, Norton,
etc....but all the tools cannot detect the Recycler folder and get rid
of it.

Can someone tell me how do I get rid of this Recycler folder? It is
very menacing indeed.

Why do you suspect malware, and why a virus in particular?

I doubt that the folder has anything to do with your problem, but I
can't imagine what the problem really is based only upon your
description and wild assed guesses.

This is the folder used by the Recycle Bin. It is not shown even if you
set Explorer to Show Hidden Files and Folders.

Go into My Computer, or any folder for that matter, look up top,
[Tools] [Folder Options] [View] [Hide Protected Operating System Files]
uncheck that and you should see it after a 'second chance' type warning.

that it is a system folder that Recycle Bin uses. However i managed to
detect the Recycler virus and got rid of it from my thumbdrive. Now I
know the difference between the Recycler folder and the recycler
virus. This virus is quite prevalent and it modifies the autorun.inf
file in removable medias like the thumb drive, external hard
drive...etc.

Are you by any chance talking about the Norton Recycler folder. Do you have anything
of Norton installed

that it is a system folder that Recycle Bin uses. However i managed to
detect the Recycler virus and got rid of it from my thumbdrive. Now I
know the difference between the Recycler folder and the recycler
virus. This virus is quite prevalent and it modifies the autorun.inf
file in removable medias like the thumb drive, external hard
drive...etc.

For that reason, Avira by default, will not rum the autorun file on
removable media. It should only be a problem for those who share the
device with other machines.

Sounds more like a USB vector worm from that description.
(viruses attach a copy of themselves to code)

executable in the recycler directory and modifies or creates an
autorun.inf to point to it.
