Recycle Bin

Using XP Home, SP3.

When I have files or folders in the recycle bin and I restart or turnoff the
computer the bin is empty upon start-up. How can I get the recycle bin to
retain items in it until I decide to empty it? Thanks.

Do you by chance have CCleaner and/or Norton installed? IIRC, that was a
setting in the Norton Protected Recycle Bin. There isn't a native Windows
setting to do this.

Stop using or uninstall the cleaner utilities that you installed, or
remove their scheduled execution. For example, CCleaner can be
configure to run on login. Well, that means when you login that
CCleaner is going to run and do all that cleanup that you configured it
to do.

Just to check, you could delete some files and reboot into Windows' Safe
Mode which doesn't run all those startup items. If the Recycle Bin is
still occupied with the deleted files on a safe mode login then
something you have configured to run on Windows startup or login is
doing that cleanup.

I do have CCleaner running but I do not have empty the recycle bin checked,
so that shouldn't be the problem. I don't have Norton. I'll try the safe
mode idea. I take it then that the recycle bin normally will not empty
itself unless I have some other software telling it to. Correct?

This is very odd. I've experienced this problem for the past week or so when
I startup my computer after being shut down during the night the contents of
the recycle bin
are removed. However, following your advice I rebooted in safe mode and the
material I placed there was still there. I then restarted in normal mode and
the material was there also. I then shut down the computer and did a cold
start and the stuff was still there. I just can't figure it. As late as this
morning it was deleting contents but now it isn't. I'm confused.

You should know by know the 2-decade old mantra for fixing problems with
Windows is to reboot. Up until maybe a decade ago, it was the first
suggestion you got from the IT folks.

It's like having a problem with your car. As soon as you bring it to a
mechanic, it purrs like a kitten :)
Glad it's working now, though.
