"recently used files" not working

in the file menu, there used to be a way to select the most recently open
files.
this option is gone.

I can't switch it on in the Tools->Options->General tab, since this option
is greyed out there.

same for excel, powerpoint and word (office 2003)

what could be the problem? I was not able to find more info on the microsoft
web. it only mentions the way to enable/disable thtough the options. but
exactly this I cannot do... :-(

Found my solution to this problem in TweakUI/IE....add new documents to
Documents on start Menu. I may have unticked box at some time?!

But that should stop the MRU working all the time, not intermittently -
which is what you reported. We all know the symptoms of TweakUi and that is
either ON or OFF, not intermittent.
