Recently used file list won't display

Whenever I open the file/menu/dropdown list the same name is shown for the
'recently used files' description-folder name. I've turned on/off/on the
recently used files option but the 'title' is still the same. Example:

1 C:\...\Policy 3 rev ...
2 C:\...\My Documents\Policy 3.doc
3 C:\...\My Documents\Policy 3copy.doc
4 C:\...\My Doucments\Policy 3 columns.doc
5 C:\...\Word Doc\whaterver.doc

The most recently used file DOES open (when I click on 1, 2, 3 etc) but the
words repeatedly appear as above on the drop menu.

It seems by the 5th file it reads correctly. I don't know if it messed up
when I was experimenting with templates but this has been buging me for a
year!! I use Word 2003
Thanks for any help.

Hi Tochay,

In Windows, shorthand for 'higher up' folders is
one dot - current folder
two dots - one level up

The 'dots' are used when there isn't enough space in the way the most recently used file list is implemented. If you're starting to
open a document in a location other than the one in Tools=>Options=>File locations (or other than the 'my documents' folder) for
documents or where the total length of the full file path plus document name exceeds ~39 characters you'll see the 'dots' more
often, but in this case the 3 dots may be used just to indicate 'more here than can be displayed'.

As an alternative, you can use File=>Open=>My Recent Documents to see just the file names.

Hi Bob,
Thank you so much for the response. I understand about the ....dots.
This hard to explain...here's the challange.

The drop down list never reads different until it reaches the 5th 'recent
file'.
1 C:\...\Policy 3 rev ...
2 C:\...\My Documents\Policy 3.doc (<not the real name of doc)
3 C:\...\My Documents\Policy 3copy.doc (<not the real name of doc)
4 C:\...\My Doucments\Policy 3 columns.doc (<not the real name of doc)
5 C:\...\Word Doc\whaterver.doc (<this is the real name of a
doc)

#1-4 will always reads the same no matter where I open it from or what I
name the document.
After the 5th file it will reflect the correct name. #1-4 does open the
actual last used document, just doesn't reflect the correct name of the doc.
Good Luck & Big Thanks,
tochay
