Receiving POP3 messages problem- Windows Mail/ Outlook 2007/ Windows Live Mail

Steve

I am using an ACER 5630 laptop with 2G RAM and running Vista Home Premium.

I have an upto date copy of McAfee running on the machine which is enabled
for eMail (+other) protection

My normal POP3 client is Windows Mail and has worked perfectly since I
bought the machine 6 months ago.

Last week, I started having a symptom where a message appeared to get
"stuck" during the receive synchronisation. The first 3 of 7 would
download, then the server would timeout whilst waiting for the fourth and
so on. The effect of re-trying to synchronise is that I get duplicates of
the messages that will download, but the original problem remains. I
extend the timeout on Windows Mail to 5 minutes, but it still times out on
a specific message.

I tried using Outlook 2007 but similar symptoms - some messages get left on
the server

I tried Windows Live Mail same symptoms.

Given that some messages download and some don't, the client config must be
OK, and I'd assume McAfee is OK too - so where do I look for the problem?

Thanks in advance for any guidance!

Most of the McAfee antivirus programs tend to cause various problems
in Windows Mail, although seldom immediately. They have to be
uninstalled, not just disabled, to stop the cause of the problems. Most
of the Norton antivirus programs and a recent one from Trend do this
too. I don't know if they do the same to Windows Live Mail and
Outlook.

You might try logging on to webmail, if your email provider supports
it, and deleting the first message that keeps failing to download. This
sometimes gets past problems at the email provider.

Uninstall McAfee. You have been lucky so far, but McAfee apparently
downloaded an update for you that broke you mail in any program.

Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. Also exclude EML
files from the scan. It provides no
protection not provided by the regular resident protection.
Besides that, McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail and
Outlook Express and should be uninstalled. The latest version of Trend's
anti-virus seems to be causing problems too.

Thanks guys, uninstalled McAfee all works fine. Re-installed McAfee all
is good again, must have been problem with an update as you said.

Many Thanks

If you keep McAfee, sooner or later Windows Mail will break again.
Mark my words.

AVG and Avast are better choices and they're free for home users.

Thanks,
I have acer travelmate 2410, XP pro and outlook 2007. Outlook 2007
stuck when started receiving emails and just downloaded the 1st mail.
After uninstalling McAfee the problem resolved.
I've seen McAfee is good virus scan software that uses less system
resources as compared to Nortan. I have to install it again.
