I canot receive attachments larger than approximately 1.5 mb from my aol
account with windows mail. I can download larger attachments using AOl
directly or thunderbird. What should I do to make windows mail work? Thank
you.

Which antivirus are you running? Make sure its email scanning is disabled.

I am using Norton Internet Security, vs. 15.0.0.60 with scan of incoming
emails disabled.

Norton antivirus is among the top three troublemakers for Windows Mail.
Just disabling its email scanning is seldom sufficient.
The only way you can prove or disprove that Norton is the culprit is to
uninstall it, followed by using their debris removal tool:

Another option is to upgrade to Windows Live Mail, which is more
resistant to the adverse effects of overly intrusive antivirus products:

I have used the second option and upgraded to Windows Live Mail. It seems to
work even with the Norton incoming email scan activated. Super!
There is only a slight adjustment I would like to make to Live Mail: How can
I avoid that the attached photos show up in the text area and not just as
attachments?
I appreciate your help very much!

I want to caution you about using email scanning with Windows Live Mail.
It may go fine initially, but eventually the account will become corrupted.

As far as photos, are you talking about incoming messages?
Both WM and WLM show attached photos at the bottom of the text
of incoming messages. I don't think there is any way to avoid that.
