Receiving DHCP IP from ISP, but can't PING or Browse

Have a friends machine that can't browse the internet at all. Did major
uninstall/cleanup of useless apps and spyware on machine. The computer gets
it's ip, dns and gateway from the ips via a cable modem. An ip config
verifies all nec. info, including the current lease time etc, but can't ping
or browse. How can the machine receive a valid current ip, but can't ping a
thing or browse? Machine is a Dell 2ghz w/XP Home.

Invalid subnet mask, default gateway or wrong or missing dns server settings
can cause this. Post here what "ipconfig /all" command reports.
