Recalculation problem

R

Rob

I get this error message when trying to recalculate the hyperlinks on my
website using FP. Any idea what the problem is and how to correct it?

Could not find a web server at 'www.rollingbluethunder.com' on port 80.
Please check to make sure that the web server name is valid and your proxy
settings are ser correctly. If you are sure that everything is correct, the
web server may be temporarily out of service.

Ask you host to run a server health check.

If the problem can be shown to have been caused by a

Depends if they have allowed you access to it
Try Tools Server Admin

I heard back from them and this is what they told me. Are the blowing smoke
up my... or what?

"It seems that your site is too big for the frontpage to work.
As it keeps getting timeout and web is busy when try to execute frontpage.
If you can remove all unused files from your public_html, it will be much
faster for your frontpage to work properly"

S

Stefan B Rusynko

While they are correct in the FP SE work faster on smaller sites
- they also have the ability to tune the FP SE for larger sites
Consider breaking it up into subwebs if the don't know how

PS
You certainly are using a mixed bag of technologies (ASP, ASP.Net, and PHP)
- at least make each section using each of those a separate subweb

I heard back from them and this is what they told me. Are the
blowing smoke up my... or what?
Not necessarily.
If your site is very large then the extensions have a lot of
processing to do when publishing. If the server is very low powered
(example 1GHz Centrino, 1GB Ram) and running a large number (1000) of
websites then you will probably get timeouts, whatever size your site.

However, the error mostly associated with the above scenario is after
publishing, or running Tools->Recalculate Hyperlinks on the live site,
is "FrontPage received a message it could not parse" (or similar
wording - my memory is not that great), or an actual Timeout error.

If your site is large, then you could try splitting it into
subsites/subwebs, each subweb can then be published on its own and
present a much smaller web to the server extensions.

Or, if you have every file in the root folder, try organising the
files into folders.

IMO, based on that response from your host, find another host.

I heard back from them and this was their response

"There is no options for tuning Frontpage extension as far as I know"

Tom [Pepper] Willett

Then follow Stefan's advice and break it up into subwebs.

Then your host doesn't have a clue how to manage the FP extensions!
