RealVNC Compatibility

There appears to be some kind of strange interaction
between RealVNC and MSAS. When I connect to a remote PC,
the screen that comes up shows that MSAS seems to be
starting multiple copies of itself over and over, then
something happens and it quits. The system tray shows
multiple icons for MSAS that disappear when the mouse is
moved over them. They then re-appear a short time
later. This is happening on the remote PC that is
running the RealVNC Server. I have not seen any problems
with the local PC running the VNC Client.

I have not found any interaction problems with
NetMeeting - either sharing the desktop or with Remote
Desktop Sharing enabled. I've switched to NM for now. I
can't use MSN Messenger (Remote Assistance) because our
corporate firewall blocks it.

This is a known issue (and brought to the attention of the developers) with
running a host session of some VNC variants.

I'm not sure that this issue applies to all VNC variants, so if you are
adventurous, you could try other variants. One workstation I work with uses
either TightVNC or UltraVNC, and hasn't complained about this issue, but we
don't use it frequently.

You don't need to use MSN Messenger to use Remote Assistance--the invitation
file can be passed by email, for example. However, port 3389, TCP must
still be open--and that's probably what is blocked.
