realtek 8139 doesn't work after upgrade to XP Pro

I upgrade my hp laptop to xp pro from xp home. my wireless networking
works fine but my realtek 8139 network isn't working. since this is a
laptop, i prefer not to take the card out and reinstall it physically.

i've removed the nic via device manager and then reinstalled it. the
nic shows up in the networking control panel as enabled. however, i
don't see the network on the botton right of the menu bar. if i
disable my wireless card, i don't have any networks.

Right click on My Network Places and select Properties. On the icon for the
Realtek NIC, do the same. Bottom right, do you have the box checked to Show
in System Tray when connected?
