Real time backup freeware?

D

DK

I am looking for a *super simple* freeware backup program. The only
requirement is that it does real time backup (or near real time, like every
hour or less). "Set it and forget it" type of thing. All other features are
very much optional. Compression with password proteiction would be
nice but I can easily live without it. Portable app (for restores) would
be a plus.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Dima

Probably SyncBack or WinMerge. Compression is there, though not sure
about encryption, portable, yea, that's in it too. Both are popular,
come regarded among freeware standards, which means no bullshit --
come-on's, hacks, cracks, or tracking piggie back all the way home.
Not really into scripting, Windows "scheduling" and whatnot, although
there may be provisions I'm offhand unaware of in those programs;- if
not, check out AutoIt: it's almost a regular workhorse near formal
programming language, and will readily do magnificant convulsions if
into heavy scripting. Nothing mentioned, btw, that costs more than
one plugged nickel or an optional donation.

Get a good hardware RAID 5? :)

Previous Versions + OS based raid 1, both come free in Windows 7+.

Previous Versions has been an OS feature since Windows Vista. Turn it on via the control panel and files are automatically backed up. You'll usually have a backup from yesterday, last week, and last month. The number of backups is dependent upon how much disk space you allocate for it.

OS based raid 1 protects you from hard drive failure. In fact, you can pullout one drive, pop it into any other computer running Windows 7+, and still read the data. No special hardware or software required, something that cannot be said for hardware raid or for raid 5.

Note that not all hard drives are meant to work in a raid, so you end up paying a little more for them. Additionally, Windows does not like to raid the system drive, so use an SSD for the system drive, and don't put any data there.

If daily backups don't cut it, or if you need protection against fire or theft, then spend money on your backup solution.

I use a proggie called FreeFileSync for several 3 TB drives. It has a
batch editing feature that runs the backup/sync when I plug my usb
devices in. That plugging in triggers the backup.

Does not have password protection features that I know but it will copy
NTFS settings over...

It's quick and keeps a small database of changes on your drives to
detect any changes and to prevent any necessary copying during furthur
operations.
