Re-install

I

Ian

I am currently trying to format my hard drive and
reinstall Windows 2000 Pro, but whenever I try to do this
I get the response that the volume is still in use, and
when I select that I do want to force a dismount it tells
me that the volume is locked. I have tried to shut down
the non-critical running processes and I get the "Access
denied" response, even though I have Administrator
priveledges. How can I format my hard drive or gain access
to these processes?

I have recently had trouble with a large volume of stuff
being installed onto my computer from the internet when my
anti-virus software went quiet on me, could this be a
cause? I feel that since this happened I no longer have
access to and/or control of my pc!

Thanks!

Hi,

The problem is you can't format and reinstall from within Windoze.

You need to have your BIOS set so you can boot from the install CD
rather than booting into Windoze first. Once Windoze is running it's
kind of like asking it to commit suicide, and it'll only do that when it
feels like it, not when you expect it to.

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000
CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute
makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the
prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

Be sure to apply these to your new install before connecting to any network.

I have tried booting from the Win2k installation cd
before, and it wouldn't let me delete the current NTFS
partition. When I pressed 'd' or 'c' (I thought about
creating another, and then trying to delete the original)
nothing at all happened. Is there any reason why this
might have happened?

In the meantime I'll try again.

Thanks,
Ian

Some other ways include; boot a win98 startup disk, run fdisk and delete all
partition information found (as long as NTFS is primary). Or use a utility
named delpart.
