RDP One-Way Only COME ON SOMEONE KIND!!

Sorry, 2nd post, no reply after week.

There are routers involved (port 3389 open, everything set to accept RA and
RDP connections), but doubt this is the problem as have also conducted the
below tests with the 2 PC's connected via dial-up only. I do notice when I
run netstat -an port 3389 appears as "Listening" and RDP is permitted in
both Firewall Exceptions and on the advanced tab in Network Connections. I
can ping all PCs all ways on the LAN.

EXPERT cannot make an RDP connection to anywhere, within the LAN or to an
outside PC. Client is v6.0.6000

However, EXPERT can both make and accept Remote Assistance requests (method
used via Windows Live Messenger 8.1 on both PCs, both ways). I believe the 2
technologies are similiar.

Seems therefore there is a setting on EXPERT that is preventing it from
making an RDP connection. I have chased down all the obvious suspects, no
joy. Probably needs a Registry tweak. All offers gratefully etc.

Well, reading your original post I am still a bit confused. Are you talking
about using Remote Desktop or Remote Assistance? This post seems to be about
Remote Desktop so lets clarify the situation.

It seems you are trying to use Remote Desktop (RDP) to access a Vista RDP
host PC from a XP client PC. Is that correct? If so make sure the XP client
is configured like this.

http://theillustratednetwork.mvps.org/ScreenShots/XP/RDP6-XPClientSettings.jpg

....and the Vista host is configured like this...

http://theillustratednetwork.mvps.org/ScreenShots/XP/RDP6-XPClienttoVistaServerConfig.jpg

If your trying to access a XP RDP host PC from a Vista client make sure the
Vista client is configured like this...

Beyond that what error message are you getting?

Al, thanks for your replying and the MVP fills me with hope!

Remote Assstance works fine both ways. It's my Xp Pro PC that can't connect
to anything be it Xp or Vista, within the LAN or elsewhere. Anyone can RDP my
PC no problem.

Thanks for pix, yes everything was already exactly like that.

"The computer can't connect to the remote computer. Try connecting again."

Nothing in Event Log.

Are you running any software on the XP client machine that may be causing
outbound RDP requests to be blocked, ie. a Cisco or other VPN client,
software firewall, etc?

No VPN, Cisco etc. Wndows Firewall RDP exceptioned, AVG anti-virus and tried
disabled. D-Link wireless router, 3389 port-forwarding set for all LAN PC's.
All other LAN PC's RDP perfectly, be it Vista or Xp. Can ping all PC's, can
Remote Assiatance all PC's both ways, including this problem PC. Also tried
with problem PC modem-connected only, thus router not involved.

Have you tried reverting back to the original Remote Desktop client
software?

Well, I gave you a link to Bob Lin's (MS-MVP) page showing you how to do
that...

So you did Al, most annoying for you!
I'm back to v5.1 now, but no change.
Well, I am not sure what to do now other than these two suggestions that
were made to some others in your same situation. Before trying this are you
sure your not running any software on the client that is blocking Remote
Desktop. I found a thread that had a similar situation and completely
removing NAV 2007 solved the problem.

So with that said the fixes of last resort are....

* You can reregister Remote Desktop by running the following command from a
command prompt. Make sure you have administrator privileges. Reboot the PC
after doing this...

regsvr32 remotepg.dll

* A fix of last resort is a "Repair Reinstall" of the OS. Backup any
critical data just in case. Note the warnings on the page...

http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Good luck and sorry I can't be of more help...

It's frustrating eh?

I registered the dll like you said, no change. Also i started Xp in safe
mode with networking, still no change.

Tell me Al, if I connect with my modem : if the "whatismyip" is
278.136.174.90 and the ipconfig of the target PC here n the LAN is
192.168.0.101, how exactly do i input the computer name in the RDP connection
window. Thought I'd try with the modem telephone line.

Thanks for all your attention so far! Maybe i should invite you to a Remote
Assistance session if you really want to waste your time.....
