RasClient error 633 on Vista x64

Hello,

Recently I noticed irritating problem with my Vista x64 - it cannot sleep
due to RasClient error.

When I press sleep button my LCD turnes off, there is a special screen, but
after this LCD goes black and PC is still working (I can see that hdd led is
blinking). After 10-15 minuts of such a situation the computer restarts.

Event Viewer shows RasClient error:
The user dialed a connection named XXX which has failed. The error code
returned on failure is 633.
Source: RasClient
ID: 20227

I hava ADSL connection, but the problem appeared without any reason (no new
software, Kaspersky installed, updated and working, Defender on, UAC on,
etc.). Previously everything was fine. The issue is that it happens
sometimes, not always, but I cannot find a reason.

Please help.

Hikari,

I did a quick google search on Ras Client error 633. From what I saw, there
doesn't appear to be one simple answer for what is causing the problem. RAS
stands for Remote Assistance Service. You get error 633 when some
application is trying to dial-out, and the modem is either not installed, or
not configured for dial-up, or is busy. In other words, the connection
cannot be made because of one of those conditions, but the system doesn't
know which one.

It seems to me that you computer is being brought out of sleep mode by this
dial-up activity. I don't know what you have installed, but this may give
you some idea of what to look for. Do you have some device, like a Palm
Pilot, that could be trying to sync or to update itself? Look for something
you have installed that is configured to run automatically and to connect to
something or someone else using dial-up. Do you have VPN installed? Malware
could also cause this condition.

It can be hard to determine what is running in the background and causing
this situation. You can try using Task Manager to observe what is running.
You could look at the Event Logs to see what is going on.

Perhaps these comments provide enough information for you to proceed to a
solution. Also, try using google to gather additional information if you
need more to go on. You can post back with questions and someone here may
have some answers. Anyone else?

Thanks for reply.

Your answer meets my expectations. The problem is that the sofware I'm using
(P2P, some communicators, Outlook) indeed are set to automatically connect to
internet, but they have been installed for a month and then the problem
didn't exist.

Malware may be the case, but I'm using Defender + Kaspersky and both perform
full system scan every 3 days so I feel quite safe.

Hikari,

There is one other item I forgot to mention in my earlier post. Your
network connection can bring your computer out of sleep mode unexpectedly
because of a setting. To check for this condition, go to Device Manager and
open Network Adapters and select Properties. In the window that opens, click
on Power Management. Make sure you check "Allow the computer to turn off
this device to save power." You may have checked "Allow this device to wake
the computer." Just an idea that may work for you.

Hikari,

NO, not the modem, but the Network Adapters. The network adapter is not a
modem. It's a NIC.

Chers,

Sorry, I wasn't clear enough.

My modem (speedtouch 330) installs as 2 devices:
- USB Device (USB)
- Speedtouch adapter (Network Card)

Neither the former nor the latter has Power Management tab.

Hikari,

OK, that response clarifies that point. It's the NIC part of the process
that I was concerned with. Too bad it has no power management function, as
that function could impact on sleep mode. Just a thought. Thanks for the
clarification.

I think I tried everything that come to my mind and it's still the same.

The problem is that I have this error that prevents Vista from sleeping from
time to time, independently of software I'm using.

Is there any way to analyze the issue more deeply than just even viewer?

One thing that must be added - I had this problem approx. 2 months ago and I
reinstalled my Vista (so this is the second time I have to fight rasclient).
Now I will not do that as there is no guarantee that the problem will not
appear after a while :/
