ADSL Reboot causes PC Auto-Restart error

Hi,

My version of Windows is the XP Home Edition. Recently, I've been facing an
error with my Windows which is constantly irritating me. I am currently
relying on an ADSL connection to the internet, which gives me dynamic IP
addresses. My PC is always on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, without any
hardware malfunctions or burnouts so far. However, the ADSL connections often
experience downtimes, where the internet connection is cut off. When this
happens, most people would only have to restart their router and continue to
use their computer smoothly while waiting for their connection to
re-establish. My PC suffers a problem here because I cannot do so. Whenever
the router is rebooted or the computer is disconnected from the router for
any reason, an error window automatically pops out on my screen. This error
window is unusual as it cannot be closed/minimized, and it appears with a
5-second countdown till it restarts. Due to its quick reaction, I have not
been able to read the full error report which appears for 5 seconds in the
same windows, but I did recall coming across words like 'Allaire', 'Cluster',
'Error'.

May I know whether anyone else here has experienced such a weird error? And
is there a diagnosis and/or solution to it?

I would suspect some sort of malware infestation that is constantly
using or at least checking your Internet connection.

When you are not actively doing anything on the Internet open Control
Panel - Network Connections, right-click on the icon for your
connection, select Status, and watch the packet counts in the Activity
section of the window to see if they are constantly increasing. If
they are then you may have something malicious or at least mischevious
installed on your computer and you should check further to see what it
is. Try one of the following free online scanning sites:

Also open the properties of the NIC, or USB ports if no NIC, and set
them so not shut off to save energy. Many won't recover from this state.

Thank you very much for your information. However, after monitoring my
packets for quite some time, I feel that they packet activity is normal and
does not act strangely. I will scan for malwares soon as you suggested, then
post the outcome here.

As for Joe's suggestion, what is a NIC?

NIC = Network Interface Card. That's what you connect your router or
modem to. It can be an Ethernet card, but I was trying to save some
typing..
