Randomly, XP pro does not recognize video board and monitor

When first booting in the AM, XP Pro will sometimes not
recognize the video board (AGP) and monitor. XP will load
with standard default drivers. Display properties shows
the generic default video board and generic default
monitor. This always happens with the graphics board and
the monitor together (Never one or the other.)

But...when I go to the device manager, it shows the video
board and monitor properly identified and operating
properly. The only fix I have found is to shut down the
machine and reboot. It ALWAYS immediately comes back
properly identifying both the video board and the monitor.
This last for a few days and then the problem occurs again.

I have just purchased a new video board, have the proper
latest drivers installed (for monitor too) but this random
problem still persists. If someone has a solution for this
vexing problem, please advise.

To clarify:
I installed a new GeForce video board by the book. I first
uninstalled the old driver and rebooted with the new
GeForce video card and its install CD. The new drivers
were installed and properly identified by XP pro.

The monitor has never been changed.
When this problem randomly occurs, XP Pro ignores the
GeForce board and monitor and instead uses its own default
driver and settings for a "generic graphics board and
monitor". This problem always involves the graphics card
and monitor at the same time.

The failure to recognize problem occurs the same way with
the old video board as with the newly installed one.

Thanks for helpful input.
