Random webpages on Internet Explorer

When I type in the address of a website that does not exist into
Internet Explorer, it takes me to a weird search page with a nonsense
web-address and ads for various obscene websites. Why does it do this?
I just want to see a "page cannot be displayed" error page if I type
in the wrong address.

Here's a specific example. I have two computers. I'm trying to access
the Catholic University's website (www.cua.edu). On one computer, I am
able to access the website. On the other computer, the computer spends
several seconds looking for the website, then takes me to foxic.net,
which has pornographic advertisements.
