Random directories appearing in my root path

I have a new PC with XP media edition on it.

I'm getting a bunch of random directories being created in my root
directory. They all have names like "3K3LVBD03VD3" (I'm just typing
randomly). Some are empty, and some contain installation log files from what
appears to be Microsoft updates. I've been deleting them, but new ones keep
coming back.

Are these being creating from the Microsoft updater? Why aren't they getting
deleted.

Thank you, but I don't understand why these folders aren't being deleted
automatically. Its a pain to go in every week and delete half a dozen
folders. I haven't encountered this problem on any other XP machine.

I have no idea why the folders do not get automatically deleted. I just
know that it happens sometimes.
