Radeon HD 2600XT / Direct3D problems

Hope this is the right newsgroup to ask this.If not please let me know
I have just bought a (secondhand) Radeon HD2600XT graphics card and it does
not seem to be working properly, at least the 3D functions.
It failed the Direct3D tests in dxdiag so I reformatted the hard drive and
did a fresh install of Windows XP (thought it might be a DirectX problem -
bit drastic I know, but I had run out of options). Same thing - failed the
spinning cube test -all three of them.
Does this mean that the 3D parts of the card are knackered ? Displays 2D
fine.
Appreciate any help you can give as I am at my wits end
Thanks a lot

Can you provide the make and model of motherboard used ?

What is the brand and model number of the video card
(you're missing the detail of whether it is AGP or
PCI Express or a vanilla PCI interface).

The advice may differ, depending on the interface.
Chances are, your card is AGP, and you could be missing
the motherboard AGP driver. In Device Manager, System entries,
there should be an AGP entry in there, with a vendor specific
AGP driver mentioned. (My VIA motherboard uses UAGP35.sys
for its AGP driver.)

If you have CCC (Catalyst Control Center) for setting up the
card, then the SMARTGART tab will show details of your
hardware interface. If the card is AGP, then some of the
AGP stuff should be shown as working.

These are the components of an ATI AGP card

1) Chipset driver, to make AGP entry in Device Manager under System
2) ATI video card driver
ATI Catalyst Control Center (CCC), the advanced portion of Display Control Panel
.NET 2.0 (library used by CCC, bundled with driver package)
DirectX, with 9.0c being a possibility for the current version
(may be bundled with driver package, or available from microsoft.com)

ATI driver support for their recent AGP cards is not very
good. When buying an AGP card now, it pays to check
the comments from card owners (Newegg is a good source
for reviews). In some cases, the owners will tell you where
to find a good version of whatever drivers are "floating
around". I'm lucky, in that my older AGP card is mature,
and the drivers haven't changed in some time. I currently
don't have CCC and .NET 2.0 installed, and I can still
game with my card.

(some reviews here, for an AGP version)

Thanks for the offer of help Paul. Fortunately the problem is now resolved.
It was driver problem - but they really make you look long and hard to find
the right ones !
Thanks again
Rick
