Windows XP QuickLaunch occasionally slow

On this new XP Pro PC I have about the same number (30-35) of QuickLaunch icons configured as I did on my old XP Home PC. A dozen of these are visible in the Taskbar and I display the list of the other score by clicking the >> icon. Normally the list appears immediately, but occasionally it takes 3-5 seconds. Never had that in 5 years on the old (much slower) PC, so I'd appreciate any suggestions on the likely cause and how to fix it please.

Do any of the shortcuts have custom (larger file sized) icons?
