Quickest way to transfer files?

I need to transfer 300,000 images from
a HDD with an OS (W98se) and a second HDD
both still installed in the computer.

Take them out and place in an enclosure as external HDD?

My network (easy transfer) USB cable will not work with W98se

any ideas?

Yes, you can mount the drive in an external enclosure and do the transfer.
What are you transferring to?

Thanks Big Jim,
ahhh I ripped the box open
removed the drive
and put it in an external HDD and copied
40Gb took about an hour or so, (I nodded off)

Unless the XP machine is a laptop, it might've been easier to slave the
W98 drive inside the XP box.

That will likely be fastest, yes. There are also non-enclosure adapters
available, that do the same thing. These are useful things to have on hand
and aren't expensive. Your old system is likely using IDE drives, be
aware that both IDE and SATA enclosures and adapters are available.

You may also want to look at FileSync from www.fileware.com for the copy
utility. Unlike the Windows copy utilities, it won't just give up and
disappear if it encounters a problem. It will log problems and move on to
the next file.

Whenever I've priced an enclosure it's about half the price of a usb hd
from Walmart, hardly very cost effective.
Only place I've seen those cable sets is on ebay. They're priced low but
mailing costs are high.

I have been paying between CDN$15 and CDN$25 for enclosures. I normally
won't buy pre-filled enclosures because I want to put *good* drives in them,
and 500 gig drives are about CDN$120. I see lots of failed hard disks, so
I want to have control over the drive brand and model.

If you're referring to USB thumb drives, I don't rely on those as I have a
drawer of failed ones. And they have size limits.

Enclosures and cables have allowed me to image, clone and service hard disks
much, much faster than I would otherwise be able to. I've done this dozens
and dozens of times with the same units.

I see them regularly in stores here, though sometimes you have to ask as the
boxes all look the same. Most online retailers sell them, too. Your local
retailer should be able to get them for you easily.

I suppose I am fortunate and just go to the store to get these. At most, I
pay transit fare for shipping, which presently totals around CDN$5.
