Question about Windows Media Player 10 Sync

A

Ash

I am using WMP 10 on Windows XP Home SP2. I really like the sync
feature, but I don't like the fact that it automatically converts my
music from anything above 128 kbps bitrate to 128. A lot of my music is
192 kbps, where I like it. Aside from it taking longer to syncronize, it
takes away from the quality of my music. Is there any way that I can
stop WMP from converting my music?

Oh, I have an iRiver IFP-790 mp3 player. And any time I try to configure
the mp3 player under the 'Devices' Settings, WMP encounters a problem
and shuts down.

Thank you.

with your device connected and turned on,

tools | options | devices | select device, click properties

choose NOT to downconvert automatically. It'll whine, just tell it to "do
what I told you, damn-it!"

See, the thing is, whenever I click the device, or even select by
pressing the down key, as soon as it's selected, windows media player
shuts down. It's really weird ...

Error Info:
AppName: wmplayer.exe AppVer: 10.0.0.3802 ModName: wmp.dll
ModVer: 10.0.0.3802 Offset: 002dda5c

I can't seem to figure it out. I've got the latest driver, the mp3
player is on the support site for WMP10. I've tried rolling back the
driver to the one on the CD, updating it, EVERYTHING! It just doesn't
make sense(to me).

Thanks, frodo!

Ah, WMP 10 doesn't like your player - not uncommon I'm afraid. It is not
as compatable w/ my Nomad IIC as WMP 9 was, but it's still usable at
least. Sorry.

Now, as to that version number: you are at least the second person to
state your version as 3802. Mine is 3646, and "check for updates" always
says I'm just fine. So, how did you get to 3802?? Have you installed any
hotfixes??

this will show all avail hotfixes:

I see seven; I have NOT installed any.

If you have some installed I suspect they will show up in Add/Remove
Programs. You could try removing them.

ALso, is your device plugged into a "clean" usb port, and not an external
hub? If a hub try connecting directly.

I just re-installed it yesterday after a windows wipe 'n clean.

it appears this will take you up to version 3901:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;892313

that doesn't mean it'll actually fix anything tho...
AppName: wmplayer.exe AppVer: 10.0.0.3802 ModName: wmp.dll
ModVer: 10.0.0.3901 Offset: 002ddb9c

Nope - didn't fix a thing :(

And it is plugged into a 'clean' port, too. Sort of. It's connected to
one of the ports on the front of the computer, but that wouldn't really
make a difference, would it?
