Quality of picture on DVD. not as good

Once you capture and copy video onto DVD why is the quality not as crisp and
clear...

I have tried a firewire connection from my sony handycam docking station but
this has not registered as being connected so have had to use USB..Would
using a n S-video lead be better or would this not work either?

All i want is nice clear DVD's like the original tape quality

USB generally works at a lower resolution, but if you can save it to your pc
as a full frame dv-avi file this will make no difference.
s-video I expect would be worse.
When the film is recorded to the minidv tape you have a dv file.
This is recoded to the pc as a dv-avi file, having chosen that as above,
this will match exactly the tape, and is a compression ratio of about 5.1.
If you capture as wmv then you will lose quality here as you ahve applied
compression.

When you save to mpeg2 for dvd you apply compression, you have to, to get it
to fit on the disc adn also to coply with the dvd standards. From the real
thing this is about a 20.1 compression, from the dv-avi file you can see the
size difference as one hour dv-avi is 13gb, one hour mpeg2 for dvd is about
4gb.

The quality of the enocder you buy and use will determine the quality of the
mpeg file. Generally the more you spend the better the encoder, the better
the result. You won't get hollywood using a cheap encoder, their's costs
many thousands and will do many passes, whereas we would use one which will
do 2 passes at most. The settings chosen also make a difference, so don't
try to put on more than about 1 hour unless you can use ac-3 encoding for
audio.

what software are you using?
since moviemaker generally won't capture from USB or burn DVD's it must be
something else.

It is windows movie maker, I save the finished file to my PC then drag it to
Cyberlink burn software to burn the CD...

I have cyberlink power director but everytime i try to capture video it
tells me there is an error..so christ knows what is up with this..so i use
windows movie maker because it works!...well! so so...

The moviemaker does capture from usb though..I have a sony handycam with a
cradle constantly connected to the pc

when saving the movie in movie maker what format are you saving in. also,
if you are capturing via USB, that will reduce your quality.

I have a follow-up question for you.

I am experiencing a lack of video quality when I transfer my video from my
Sony Handycam to my PC. Then even more degredation when I burn a DVD from
that video.

Can you please give me some advice on changes I should make? Here are the
steps I'm following:

1) I'm capturing my video from my Sony Handycam with USB (not firewire, but
I have that option)
2) The video coming from my handycam is saved as .wmv file
3) When I'm done editing my movie, I save the final version as a .wmv file
(should I use .avi or .mpeg?)
4) I then burn to DVD with third party software.

The video on the PC is poor quality. The video on the DVD is terrible. Any
advice?
