Q: NIC problem

Hello all,

Recently I had to re-install Win95 on my old (Pentium166/32MB)
machine. Everything went OK, except that the network refused to
come up alive. Note that it all used to work earlier.

What I tried so far
-------------------

- I tried NIC cards from various vendors and got the same
problem (described below) and hence ruled out any card
problem.

- Swapped the slots with other working non-network cards.
They work fine. So it is not a slot issue.

- Tried (Win95, Win95A)x(WinSock, WinSock 2) combinations
with appropriate drivers. No luck. (I have not upgraded to
DUN1.3 if that is an issue).

- Didn't look like an IRQ conflict issue as the IRQs listed
during boot up were all unique.

Symptoms of the problem
-----------------------

After I get the username/passwd window to login to Microsoft
networking and provide that information, one of two things
happen.

Case 1: The windows freezes. I see the background color of the
screen, but no icon and the mouse cursor freezes.

Case 2: I see a series of rapidly changing error messages, the
last one of which looks like:

An exception 0D has occured at 0028:C00028CA in
VxD VMM(01) + 00018CA. This was called from 0028:
C002B8D4 in VxD VPICD(01) + 00000778. It may be
possible to continue normally.
...
Press any key to continue.

If I have seen this correctly, the exception number of the
previous messages remained the same (0D) and the other things
that I saw in place of VPICD were VTDAPI and VMOUSE.

After this I see the following message:

A fatal exception 0D has occured at 0028:C0002951
in VxD VMM(01) + 00001951. The current application
will be terminated.

Only several CTRL+ALT+DEL let me reboot the machine at this
point.

The problem goes away when I remove the card. Note again, I have
experimented with NICs from various vendors (having different
chipsets I believe) but encountered the same problem.

What should I try next? What went wrong here?

Reards,
- Swapnajit.

Was this a clean install? Does this laptop have Zone Alarm software
installed?
