Put existing Web site in FrontPage 98

Back in 1998 I was unemployed and bored, so I bought Frontpage 98 and
the book _Frontpage 98 for Dummies_ and figured out how to create a
Web site for my husband's small business. I never turned into an
expert; I just had all day to fool around, and I made an adequate site
to put on the Internet. After 6 months, I went back to full-time work
and pretty much abandoned the Web site. Then I got a new computer and
never reinstalled FrontPage 98, although my operating system is still
Windows 98, and FrontPage 98 is compatible with that. So, no more
FrontPage 98 and no Web site files on my hard drive.

Three days ago Keith switched ISPs. So his Web site is no longer on
the Internet until I upload the files, although I did transfer
evansplumbing.com so that it points to the correct server. I do have
on a zip disk a backup of the Webshare directory, which I heard
somewhere years ago is where Frontpage 98 stored the files for my
specific Web site.

This morning I reinstalled FrontPage 98. Can anyone tell me how to put
the Web site back on my computer so that I can edit it and upload it
to the Internet with FrontPage 98? There's no point in getting a more
up-to-date program; I just want to make some edits and upload the site
once. Then it's no longer my responsibility.

Should I copy Webshare (and subdirectories) to my hard drive? Does it
matter where on my hard drive? Since I installed FrontPage 98 this
morning, I do have a WEBSHARE directory on my C drive.

I hate to sound dumb, but I'm afraid. If I screw it up, I won't know
how to undo what I did.

If I copy my old WEBSHARE from my zip disk to the WEBSHARE on C, that
will not only copy but also replace a bunch of files and
subdirectories.

Couldn't I just copy Webshare anywhere on C, then in Frontpage, in the
File menu, choose NEW>FRONTPAGE WEB>IMPORT EXISTING WEB?

It seems to me that I should IMPORT EXISTING WEB, don't you think so?

The best thing to do is open the remote online web in FrontPage and publish
it back to your computer.

I was going to suggest that, but after rereading, she states that the website is no longer being hosted because they changed the ISP. She needs to look in the ZIP drive and find the site. Isn't it possible for her to open the site from the ZIP drive using FP and publish back to her c\whereever from there?

That's what I would suggest. Open it on the zip drive and publish it to C:\whatever

Yes, I know that now. But it's too late. The site isn't on the
Internet anymore.

I did import Webshare from my zip disk into New Frontpage Web. The
navigational structure is lost, but I could open default.htm (the home
page) from other views. problem now is that the page looks terrible.
Buttons gone. Theme gone. Most color gone. Banner gone. Just the text
is left. Do you suppose I can do something to get those things back,
or do you think I just need to build a new Web site?

You need to "Publish" from the zip disk to your new web. Open the copy on the zip in FrontPage and
publish it to the location on your hard drive.

I opened default.htm from E\Webshare\WWWROOT\evansplumbing (the name
of the Web site). The home page looks great. It opened in Internet
Explorer. In order to publish it to my hard drive, since I can't click
on PUBLISH unless the site is open in Frontpage, should I go through
the same process as I did before (New>Frontpage Web>Import an Existing
Web) and then, instead of choosing E\Webshare, choose to import from a
Web site? No, that wouldn't work, would it?

Open FrontPage. Click Open site or web ( it's been awhile since I've used 98 ) Browse to the zip
drive and the web folder.
Once the web is open in FrontPage ( you can see the folders and files ) select Publish and set the
"publish to" location as a place on your C:\Drive.

Also, you could use windows explorer to find the folder containing the web on the zip drive. Right
click the folder, select Copy, then browse to a location on your C:\ drive and click Paste. Windows
will copy and paste the entire web directory.

Then, open FrontPage and browse to the new location on your C:\ drive.

The website "should" be intact and function properly.

Yes, that's what I thought you meant and what I tried to do before I
replied to you. Problem is, Open Frontpage Web doesn't let you browse
the drives on my computer, as Open normally does in programs. When I
Open Frontpage Web, I get a Getting Started box where the
evansplumbing site that I imported from my zip drive is listed. It
also has a More Webs button, but that doesn't give me the ability to
browse C or E, either.

Am I getting closer? I had been trying to Open Frontpage Web in the
Frontpage Explorer. I opened the Editor and chose Open from the File
menu, and, yes, I can browse my computer from there. So I'll try it
from there. But I don't know if that will work.

Open FP and try File Open Web and typing in the location as:
E:\Webshare\WWWROOT\evansplumbing\
If the web (not a page) opens,
and you have PWS installed and running then use File Publish web and enter the location as http://localhost/
or publish to a disc based web as say
C:\evansplumbing\

I just did what you suggest, and here's the message I got: "The folder
E:\Webshare\WWWROOT\evansplumbing is contained by a server based
Frontpage Web. To access this Web you must use the http:// url for the
web server." Oh, you got me so close to the solution! I think that
means I should use http://localhost/evansplumbing?

I think I can stop worrying about this. Last night I got an email from
my brother-in-law. He's been a computer expert for many years. But I
thought, when he moved to Maryland (we live in California), we had to
stop expecting computer help from him. And right now he's even farther
away, in Japan on business.

In his email he told me something I was not aware of. A few weeks ago
(just because he loves his brother [my husband], I guess) he
downloaded evansplumbing.com from the Internet onto his computer so
that evansplumbing.com would be backed up. (I didn't even know until
yesterday you could do that., and he didn't know I had backed it up on
zip.) He said he'd upload it when he gets back to Maryland (in a day
or so.)

When Rusty lived in California, he'd do computer work for us, and
Keith would do plumbing work for Rusty and his wife. Now it's not an
even trade.
