Publishing Error /with FP 2000

I originally had FP 98, then upgraded to FP 2000. Am running on
Windows 2000 Pro SP 3. I sucked down my website today from my Host
ISP and did my changes. However, when I try to publish I get the
following error.

"Error 2 opening registrykey SOFTWARE/microsoft/shared Tools/ Web
Server Extensions\Ports\Port 80"

We have tried everything, including uninstalling FP and blowing all
traces out of the registry, then reinstalling. We told FP to install
the Server and extensions but now I'm not even finding where to turn
the WebServer on.

Any ideas, suggestions, etc.

I originally posted this in the FrontPage Extensions group but haven't
had any replies as yet.

P.S. I also run Nortons Internet Security but even turned it off and
that didn't change anything.

Sounds to me like the Error 2 message is meaning that the
FP extensions on the host server are either not compatible
with the new extensions, or they are not loaded at the
host server. Check with the host to find out. If your site
was working before, but not now with 2000, this is more
than likely the case.
Another quirky thing is when you may be publishing the
site to the host. Make sure you are pointing to the
correct directory, and use the correct password.
Hope that helps,
Cliff K

Hi Cliff,

I'm not even getting that far along. It doesn't even ask me for the
log-in or password. As soon as I put in the path to where I want to
publish (which is my existing web on the Internet), then I get the
Error 2 message.

That is a problem on the remote server, as FP first connects to the server,
and then the server prompts for the login.

Now that we have uninstalled for about the 4th time and just put FP 98
back on, I can't even import a web any more. Still getting a port 80
error message.

It seems to be a problem on my computer but not sure how to solve it.

Which version of Windows are you running? If Windows ME or Windows XP Home,
then neither of these OSs support the use of any MS Personal Web Server,
which is required to run FP98. FP98 was design to be used with a Web Server,
whereas FP2000 and up, do not require a web server, as they create
disk-based web by default.

I'm running Windows 2000 SP 3. Since my earlier message we once again
uninstalled all FrontPage items and reinstalled first FP98 then the FP
2000 upgrade, then the Internet Server that is in Windows 2000. I can
once again import a web from my Web Hosting ISP and I can even publish
it to another directory on my hard drive but am unable to publish it
to my web site. I still get the same error

Server error: Error 2 opening registry key
"SOFTWARE\microsoft\shared tools\webserver extensions\Ports\Port80"

I'm very anxious to solve this problem so I can publish my changes to
our website. We have closed our company and that is what I wish to
send up. We are keeping the website as the domain is paid up for a
couple of years but I need to take the company information down.

1. IIS should have been installed prior to install FP.
2. FP98 should not have been installed and it doesn't sound like you did a
custom install and excluded the FP Personal Web Server and FP98 extensions.

Do the following:

1. Remove both versions of FP and the FP web server, and IIS.
2. Install IIS and make sure it is running.
2. Install FP2000, when prompted for qualifying product, insert the FP98 CD
and point the dialog to your CD drive.

If the remote server has the FP extensions, do not use the Import function,
use the File Menu | Open Web and enter the URL to the remote server, then
your login info, the click Ok, then Open. Once open File Menu | Publish Web
and enter http://localhost or http://127.0.0.1 or http://machinename

Also if the remote server has the FP extensions, you can also work directly
on remote server to make your changes by using File Menu | Open Web and
enter the URL to the remote server, then your login info, the click Ok, then
Open.
