Hi everyone.

I am considering changing around two of my systems.

why?

No not because I got nothing better to do.

1. I need more storage and am thinking of getting a 500gb Samsung Sata Drive.

2. One pc is quicker than the other but is not the MAIN PC I use. I want to make the main one the quicker more powerfull one.

3. In the long run when I finally do upgrade which will not be for a while, I will sell off the parts of the less powerfull one and keep the more powerfull one as my back up PC or less powerfull PC.

Right here is the scenario.

PC A :

This pc is the main computer I use the most.
It has got all my data on it, including all my media content.
I got a high class chair, printer, a good speaker system, tv card, tft, nice desk, good lighting, huge tower case and it is in my computer room too.
The problem with this PC is that the specs are slightly lower than the other pc and the motherboard is rubbish!!!

PC B:

This PC is the pc I do not use a lot.
It is slightly quicker it has got a really good motherboard with lots of features.
This one is in my bedroom. I was originally planning to get a TV card in this machine and a good TFT but the aireal let me down and I decided to ditch this idea.

Here are the specifications for both machines

PC A :

Enermax 350 W
Lexus Bn 790E motherboard (Got this in 2002) very old
XP 1800
Zalman Quiet CPU fan (Requires mounting holes around CPU)
1GB pc3200 (but runs at 2700 because of the motherboard)
Samsung Spin Point ATA 160 GB (approx 10gb free)
Western Digital 320GB (approx 2gb free)
Nvidia FX 5200
Hauppage Win TV Card PVR
Netgear Wireless 802.11G card
Mac Card.
Sata/Firewire/ 3 USB2.0 Connectivity Card
Creative Sound Blaster 5.1 Sound card
Chiftech Tower Blue
Floppy Drive
Lite On 52X CDRW
Pioneer DVDRW Dual layer 16 X

Now for PC B:

Gigabyte Pro 7200 (the one Flopps kindly sold me hope I got the model right)
Tagan 420W PSU
XP 2200+
Custom Made cpu fan. The heatsink is from thermaltake the fan is from ebuyer. Very quiet operation.
1GB PC3200
Samsung SATA 250GB harddrive (100gb free)
Samsung ATA 120gb Hardrive (FULL)
ATI Radeon Graphics card (cant remember what one will get back to you maybe a x800)
Wireless 802.11g card Linksys
Jeantech Tower black with blue lights (courtesy of KGB 911 wherever he is)
Floppy Drive
Liten On 40X CDRW
Pioneer DVD Drive 8X

On the side note I do have a 512GB stick of ram lying around which I will put into the Lexus Board. There is a problem with this board.

The second ram slot DOES NOT WORK. Only one slot will work.
Note I got 2 X 512mb lying around here and 1 X 256mb too but I am sure that the 256MB is corrupted.

I had written this down on some paper
I hope I have not forgotten anything.

But they are the two systems

So I want to rearrange them both, what would you put in each system?
Bearing in mind that I want a 500GB Samsung in the new system too. :)

Please write out your new system A
and System B

system B would be the slower one
System A the most powerfull.

Thanks

psd99

p.s please find the pictures attached

the bigger pc is PC A

the smaller is PC B

hope that makes sense.

I Am Assuming You Are Sticking With The Same Os. I Would Just Like To Make A Few Os Install Suggestions.use Your Old Hard Disks To Copy The Disk From One Computer Using The Other Onto Your New Disk(s).i Am Assuming You Know How To Load And Unload The Drives From One Machine To The Other.copy The Setup Disks Designated For Each Drive.remember To Copy And Paste Setup.exe Into Its Position.then You Will Have Access To The Os Setup From The Hard Drive.copy The Drive Informations To The New Hardrives.make Sure You Load All The Nessesary Drivers On The New Drive.PUT THEM IN A FOLDER.when You Have The Drives Loaded Install Them Into Thier Designated Machine, from Which The Copied Os Came From.it May Simply Boot If You Copied It Correctly.you Can Now Run Setup From The C:drive In Safe Mode.
Happy Computing!
-I WOULD LIKE TO ADD THAT THIS CONFIGURATION WILL MAKE IT EASIER TO
TRANSFER THE DRIVE TO ANOTHER COMPUTER BECAUSE SETUP WILL KICK IN
ON BOOTUP AND LOAD ALL AVAILABLE DRIVERS.WHEN YOU TRANSFER THE DRIVE TO ANOTHER COMPUTER YOU WILL HAVE TO RUN SETUP AGAIN AFTER BOOTUP FROM THE HARD DRIVE,

I'd probably just swap the motherboard/cpu/graphics card (if its an X800 its much better than the FX5200), then stick in the new 500GB drive. If you really don't use PC B much then stick as much ram in PC A as possible perhaps. :)

thanks

im thinking of getting 2 x 500gb harrdrives but use them strictly for data and install xp on a smaller hd

any ideas about the PSU's?

surely I should use the tagan on the powerfull pc?

one of the problems right now on the Current PC B is that when playing a movie it seems to STUTTER.
It is not that bad but if this problem persists on the new build when watching tv it could be fatal.
any ideas about this?

it is like it stops and starts but very quickly

BUMP!!! !!! In the end I didnt touch both pcs
but i want to change them now!

New PC A (Main pc)

Gigabyte Pro 7200 (the one Flopps kindly sold me hope I got the model right)
Tagan 420W PSU
XP 3200+
CPU fan is a problem the Zalman will not fit no mounting holes
And the huge gigabyte rocket don’t seem to fit because of a capacitor on the board
2gb memory pc3200 (2X1gb)
Hauppage Win TV Card PVR
Netgear Wireless 802.11G card
2 X sata 500gb Samsung spinpoint hardrives (Yet to buy)
I got fx5200,
or
ATI Radeon Graphics card (cant remember what one will get back to you maybe a x800)
Or one that flopps sold me
PNY Nvidia 6200 AGP 128Mb Video Card,

What one out of these graphic card would you chose?

Next problem is it worth buying a new case?

Atm for the main system I got a HUGE chiftech full TOWER its a blue one.
Something like this:
Problems is it don’t look so good, no lights etc
All those ports onboard ones such as usb2.0, firewire are not easy to access.

Can Anyone recommend a good case then?

Cheers psd99

I dont know if anyone read this thread but I changed the insides today.

IT TOOK 5 HOURS IN TOTAL!!!

IT WAS SO CONFUSING, especially the hard drives.

I had a few uncalculated errors too.

1.One of the power supplies didn't fit and when it did the sata power lead was slightly short.
2. I lost one of the screws for the Zalman fan bracket and ended up using a replacement. I took the fan in the garden to clear the dust out and I lost the screw in the grass!
3. I could not get the lite on cdrw to work - a problem not solved yet
4. I just worked out the main pc does not currently have a cdrw or a dvdrw connected to it. Meaning I can not back up or copy anything to a medium such as a cdr or dvdr! :(
5. Did not attempt to get the front panel USB and firewire to work on one of the computers.
6. Could not get dual channel memory to work on my gigabyte motherboard. It will power up but no POST and no beeps except a beep that won't beep properly. So dissapointing this.

Overall I think planning is the most important aspect of any operation or project. I had been planning this for months on end. At the moment I am almost readily set up. Just wanting to set up the new harrdrives and then get a fresh install of XP.
