Protection Over Kill?

I am running AvastAntivirus and ZoneAlert Pro on MS XP Home Edition and it
takes 10 minutes to boot and update these two applications. Is this over
kill?

yes, if both are antivirus...(I know Avast is, but what does ZoneAlert Pro
do? And do you mean ZoneALARM?)

Yes I meant ZoneAlarm. Would Avast with MS Firewall be enough? Other
suggestions? Any Happy Avast user?

For most home users - a good and updated AntiVirus software they understand,
the built-in Windows XP 'firewall', being behind a NAT router if at all
possible, the use of computing common sense and an occassional scan with
some antispyware products for cleanup/immunization against that threat is
more than enough protection.

That's exactly my setup - no problems to date!

I use ZoneAlarm and am extremely pleased with the product which offers me
spyware scanning, virus scanning, spyware protection, virus protection, and a
flexible firewall.

I have not found any need to supplement ZoneAlarm with any other antivirus
or firewall software products.

Sometimes your slow startup may be due to having enabled a check and
update of one of both of these products during startup. I prefer to control
when and how my software is updated to avoid slow startups when I'm in a
hurry.

Yep, mine too. I'm very happy with Avast and the Windows firewall with my
router is plenty for me firewall-wise.

Antivirus software vendors think they are doing us good by updating
automatically. Unfortunately they carelessly do their updates while the
system is still booting. Norton/Symantec did that and it was an
inconvenience. I just installed Panda antivirus and it seems to be more of a
hog when it updates, at least when it does while the system is booting. So I
have also turned off automatic updates, as Karl Snooks has indicated.

Why are you connected to the Net while booting? It really doesn't
make sense to be connected except while you're actually using online
resources.

Millions of systems are connected continuously, from boot to shutdown.

Millions of systems are connected continuously, from boot to shutdown.

And they are taking unnecessary risks.

Millions of people drive without seat belts, too. That doesn't mean
it's prudent.

Read again everything I said. I said it would be very easy for the antivirus
to be modified so it is convenient. If the updates are so important, then
they are being irresposible by not providing the simple improvements.
Instead their solution is to nag.

Again, it is easy to implement the critical enhancements; it is something I
could do.
