"Property Loss" Message copying images

I have just got a Dell Inspiron running Vista Home Premium. Most things work
fine, but I have come across an irritation when trying to use removable media
- usb keys, CF cards, etc. Most files copy across as they should, but image
files give rise to a warning message box entitled Property Loss, which then
asks me "Are you sure you want to copy this file without its properties? If
I click yes, it copies OK as far as I can see, but I have to do this for each
image. Since these are mostly jpegs (some bmps) that I have moved about on
usb keys regularly on XP computers, I find this baffling and I haven't been
able find any information about it.

Help - does anyone know what this is about please? What properties are
missing and what can I do about it?

Maybe it's referring to metadata like...
the date taken, camera info...etc.

Right click one of the .jpg files and go to...
Properties / Summary tab / Advanced button...
to see the info.

The following articles discuss metadata.

Many thanks John. I have looked at the properties, but cannot find any
pattern there. Since posting my original message, Dell support phoned me
back and spent quite a time looking at what was happening on my machine.
After going away to think about it, their final conclusion was that this is a
glitch in Vista, which they will be raising with Microsoft. In the meantime,
I guess I'll have to work around it.

Thanks again.

That was an interesting article - I now know much more about metadata. I'm
obviously missing something, but I thought that USB keys and CF cards acted
like any other memory, so that whatever was in a file would be reproduced
exactly when it was copied.

Many thanks again John
