Project file will not open

I created a project in windows movie maker 6.0. When I went to publish it it
automatically opens Windows DVD Maker. Once there I started to sort out how I
wanted the menu and things went bad. My laptop crashed. When I logged back in
to WMM and attempted to open my project it said, " cannot be opened because
it is not a valid Windows Movie Maker project file." Other than the title, it
is as if the project does not exist. Can someone please let me know if there
is a way to turn back time and rescue my project? Please...

As Movie Maker doesn't autoatically backup the project file, the crash may
have corrupted it... if you can't open it in either Movie Maker 6 or DVD
Maker, I'm afraid it can't be recovered. ,

John, The file says MSWMM. After the laptop crashed I rebooted and opened
windows movie maker and then tried to reopen my project. It gives a pop-up
that says it isn't a valid movie maker project and will not allow me to do
anything else. It also locked up another project that had nothing to do with
the first and was not open when the laptop crashed. Why would it say it
isn't valid?

I had the project saved. I saved it in WMM before I went to publish it. Then
in DVD maker I also saved it so that I could make copies without having to go
through WMM each time. Why can't I recover it? And why does it say it isn't
valid?

P.s. DVD maker does not show that I saved it there. It won't show me that I
saved anything there. I went to file-save. Is that wrong? Why won't it show
any of them?

Movie Maker's project files have MSWMM file extensions, and Windows DVD
Maker's project files are .MSDVD.

File extensions are hidden by default.... they are stored in whatever
folder(s) you create them in, with the default being something like:
C:\Documents and Settings\(User Name)\My Documents\My Videos

Your computer doesn't automatically backup project files. If you have backup
copies, try them. I'm assuming you don't. If yours got corrupted by the
crash, and doesn't open.... you'll have to start over.

If you have a project file, and you think it is OK but not opening, email a
copy and I'll check it on my computers.... my email address is on my
website's Products and Services page.

OK....mswmm is definitely a Movie Maker project file...if
double left clicking the file doesn't launch Movie maker
with the file open ready to continue editing...I suspect the
file is corrupted. Starting over may be the best option.
