After DVD burned, lose ability to change project

I created a terrific slideshow of digital photos, added music, etc. I then
burned it to DVD and it worked great. I then went to make some changes to
the slideshow but when attempting to open it I get the message that the
project xxx.mswmm cannot be opened because it is not a valid windows movie
maker project file. I think this may have happened because windows dvd maker
asked me if I wanted to save the project and I used the same name. I have
checked and the file properties say that it is a movie maker file. I need to
open this back up so I can make changes to it and then burn a new dvd. I
have windows vista home premium. movie maker is version 6.06. Any help
would be GREATLY appreciated.

A DVD project file is different than a Movie Maker project file... as you
overwrote the MM6 one with it, I think it's gone.

The file properties say it's a Movie Maker file because it has the .MSWMM
extension.

but there's a chance you have two project files with the same first name and
different last names... .mswmm for MM6 and .msdvd for DVD Maker. Look closer
in the folder.

thanks for your input. I understand though don't like it. since its saved
as a dvd, why won't it let me play it off the computer file directly? I can
only play the movie off the dvd I burned. I would think, at least, I could
play the movie directly from the computer file. thanks again.

I think the file you refer to as not being able to play on your pc is NOT a
dvd file, the same as the files on your dvd, but as John says the project
file, which only tells dvd amker what to do with the pieces that are put
into it.
The same as the movie maker project file won't play your movie in WMP.

Are you saying that after we spend an unreasonable number of hours creating a
video, and we burn the unfinished video to a dvd to get feedback from someone
else, and we save the file in windows dvd whatever that works automatically
with mm in vista premium, that it DESTROYS the MM project without telling us
that we're about to destroy it?

Please tell me the simple and efficient way to get the original mswmm file
back. The mm file that was saved in the dvd burner still has a mswmm suffix,
and the error message says it "will not open because it's not a real mswmm
file."

If it is not capable of being brought back, then MS has done a REALLY bad
thing by linking these two programs.

And there is no way to get it back with vista premium?

A DVD Maker project file is a different one than a Movie Maker project
file... no, DVD Maker doesn't delete the Movie Maker project files after
making a DVD from it. But you said in your post that you deleted the Movie
Maker project file by saving the DVD Maker project file by using the same
project file name.... what I'm saying is that, if you really did replace the
Movie Maker project file with a DVD Maker project file, than yes, the Movie
Maker project file is gone.

Maybe you didn't do that, and you have two project files with the same name,
the Movie Maker one (.mswmm file extension) and the DVD Maker one (.msdvd
file extension)...
