Programs Rarely Close & XP Takes long time to shut down

Hi,
My Problem is that when I close programs they dont close half of the time,
they just hang there until I restart the computer and there status is not
responding,
I can't close them in task manager either, to add onto this,
when I shut down, windows takes about 15minutes to turn off (I have enabled
autoendtasks in the registry for shutdown).
This is getting extremely irritating having to restart the computer each
time I want to close a program, ontop of that it takes 20mins to restart the
computer!
If I dont restart the computer to close the programs, the computer becomes
sluggish and most programs starts hanging.

Thank you for your help.

PS. I am running XP Pro with all the latest windows updates.

You might want to make sure your system is free from nasties, hope you have adequate protection against viruses and spyware. Also i would ask you how long its been since you defragmented your HDD? If its extremely fragmented the programs might take a long time to respond and if the MFT is fragmented, it will slow the boot. If it is indeed this, get a good automatic defragmenter that can defrag the MFT and page file also. Good luck.

Here is an excellent shutdown troubleshooter:

Often shutdown problems are caused by malware:

Hi,
Thanks for your help on the shutdown (which I am still working on),
Do you have any suggestions for the programs that rarely close?

Thank you

Just the same suggestions I gave you the first time. Troubleshoot your
machine by making sure it is clean and by going through the information
on Jim Eshelman's site. If this seems like too much work, then take the
machine to a professional computer repair shop (not your local
equivalent of BigStoreUSA). There is no shame in doing this; when my
kitchen sink doesn't work I call the plumber.

Hi,
I have tried all sugestions on the links provided,
but this has not resolved the problem, Is there
any thing else I can try without reformatting XP, or
taking to a computer store.
Thanks
