Program to manage file extension associations

I am trying to use Excel spreadsheets to manage which program(s) can
support a particular file extension and which program the extension is
currently associated with. Is there a program that can do this
and more? I have one chart for audio-video, one for archives, and one
for graphics.

(Use a fixed-width font to read this chart correctly.)

Here is a portion of my chart for audio-video files. The entire chart is
very long, so I just picked a few extensions here.

* = additional plugin or codec is required.
? = don't know.

EXT TYPE ASSOC. WMP WA PDVD NERO
--- ------ ------ --- --- ---- ----
669 AUDIO WA NO YES ? ?
AAC AUDIO WA NO YES NO YES
ASF VIDEO WMP YES YES No YES
AU AUDIO WMP YES* YES NO ?
AVI VIDEO WMP YES YES ? YES
CDA AUDIO WMP YES YES YES YES
dr-ms VIDEO WMP YES NO ? ?
MP3 AUDIO WMP YES* YES YES YES
MP4 AUDIO PDVD ? YES YES ?
MPE VIDEO WMP YES YES YES YES
MPEG VIDEO WMP YES YES YES YES
MPG VIDEO WMP YES YES YES YES
OGG AUDIO WA NO YES NO ?
VOB VIDEO PDVD YES* NO YES YES
WAV AUDIO WMP YES YES ? YES
WMA AUDIO WMP YES YES ? YES
WMV AUDIO WMP YES YES ? YES

(Nero is not currently installed. It will be once I decide which version
to install: 6.6 or 7.)

You have too much time on your hands! <vbg>

Yes (sometimes)

Thanks, but that has nothing to do with file extensions, and I have no
need of it.

That is very helpful. I marked it for reference, but it won't replace my
chart. It won't tell me which programs handle the extension (well, maybe
for a few) or which program I have currently associated with an extension.

That file extension quiz was funny. It said I'm a tar and that I'm
"rarely seen without [my] buddy gz" but there is no gz in the list of
possible answers, so I don't know what that means.

I think gz refers to gzip, a compression format. TAR is a bunch of files
bundled together into one file, but uncompressed. the GZ extension
indicates that it has been compressed using GZIP.

Sorry, this should have been:

'gz' is the file extension used by the GZip file compression utility.
Your buddy is a little short ass? <g>

I don't get why or how you would use this list but you can get a
somewhat similar list by opening Windows Explorer and clicking on
Tools>Folder Options and then the "File Types" tab. If you want to
open a file and don't know the application, you should be able to
double click on the file with Windows Explorer or other file manager
and it should open in most cases.
