Profile Dissapeared

My PC was running perfectly when I switched it off last night however when I
booted up this morning my entire profile seems to have dissapeared. The
desktop loads as if its the first time the machine has been switched on, most
of my icons are missing and all of my documents are gone. Any action I try to
take (ie open explorer) results in the following message "explore.exe has
generated errors and will be closed by windows. You will need to restart the
program. An error log is being created"

If I start up in Safe Mode I can access Windows explorer and find that under
documents and settings there are 2 administrators, one of which seems to be a
brand new profile which has nothing in it and one which contains all of my
documents. Obviously for some strange reason the compouter is booting with
the "Fresh/empty" profile.

Does anyone know how I can resolve this issue?

Thanks in advance
Rob

Hi

Thanks for the info, I followed your instructions and all was recovered fine
other than the drivers for the video card and sound card had gone and needed
to be reinstalled.

Is there any reason why a user profile suddenly becomes "Lost" and do you
know why the drivers for the sound and video cards should dissapear?

Many thanks
Rob

Hi

I used the information in tip 4631 and it worked fine. However last week I
had the same problem again so again I used tip 4631 but on this occaision it
only part worked ie:

The profile has been recovered and my documents and favourites are all
present however Norton AV asks to be uninstalled and reinstalled, about 50%
of my desktop icons are missing, I only have about 20% of my installed
programmes showing in Start>All programmes, the only way to open an MS office
programme is via an already saved document and IE keeps crashing eveytime I
type an address in the address bar and hit return.

Any ideas what this could be and how I can resolve it?
