Problens with messenger 6

J

John B.Davies

I have just downloaded messenger 6 and I am sorry I did,
as 4.7 worked without problems !

I am now having problems signing on. This is taking much
longer than it did with 4.7 and every time I sign on I
get a message. "You have been signed out of net
messenger because you signed on at another location".
Otherwise it works. Has anyone else come across is and
does anyone know how to solve it.

Why did I upgrade ! I should heve taken notice of the
old saying, "If it aint broke, dont mend it ! "

Greetings John,

MSN Messenger 6 does not upgrade Windows Messenger 4.7, as such, what you're probably
experiencing is Windows Messenger 4.7 loading in the background, which is signing you off.

Firstly, do you have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed? Norton added a new "instant messaging
scanning" feature to Norton Antivirus 2003, which can conflict with Messenger and cause this
behavior. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in the
System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click Options,
then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.

Secondly, open up Windows Messenger (you can start it from the Start, All Programs menu),
click the Tools menu, then Options, then Preferences, then uncheck "Run this program when
Windows starts".

Finally, if you're an Outlook or Outlook Express user, you'll need to stop the Windows
Messenger integration (or else it will also start Windows Messenger). To do so, for Outlook
(XP/2002), just open Outlook, click the Tools menu, then Options, then the Other tab, and
uncheck 'Enable Instant Messaging in Microsoft Outlook'. For Outlook Express, close Outlook
Express, and run this .reg file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/downloads/stopmessenger_oe.reg

You should then be able to use MSN Messenger 6 without any problem.

Many thanks Jonathan for your clear instructions. It now
appears to work. However I am concerned that I have had
to disable Norton Anti-Virus in order to make this work.
Does this mean I am now open to viruses when I use
messenger 6?

Hi John,

No, All this feature does is automatically scan files when you receive them via Messenger --
99% of the time you're apt to execute whatever someone just sent to you, which Norton will
scan anyway, regardless if this 'feature' is on or not. It's a convenience 'feature',
nothing more.

Hi John,

Norton scans every file you run. As such, when you run or view a file someone sends you via
Messenger, it will be scanned by Norton, regardless if this 'feature' is on or not. All
the feature does is scan it *before* you actually run/look at the received file.

Messenger "messages" are just text -- there is absolutely *no way* to get a virus with just
text.

Thanks Jonathan. Sorry to trouble you again but I have a
few more questions.

1. If I decided version 6 is more trouble than its worth.
How do I get 4.7 back?

2. Why can I not receive hotmail e-mails since i
installed version 6?

Thanks,

John

Hi John,

1. Windows Messenger 4.7 should still be there (click Start, then All Programs, then Windows
Messenger). If not (you may have removed it), you can just use System Restore to get it back
(click Start, then Help & Support, then "Undo changes to my computer using System Restore").

2. I don't believe whatever the problem is with your "Hotmail e-mails" has anything to do
with MSN Messenger 6 -- what is the problem?

Greetings John,

1. Click Start, then right-click All Programs and choose Open. Then click the Programs
folder, then click the File menu, then New, then Shortcut. In the location field, enter:
"%programfiles%\messenger\msmsgs.exe"
(exactly as shown above) then click Next, and then Finish.
2. Glad to hear it =)

I'm not quite sure what you mean -- if you deactivate Norton (the main engine, not the 'MSN
Messenger feature') and then execute things, you could get a virus (because Norton wouldn't
be scanning it).

Hi Jonathan, Thanks I have now sucessfully hot messenger
(both versions) on the all programslist.

What I meant by the question about Norton was this:-
When I uncheck the messenger box in Norton (not disable
Norton completely) you said the difference is that Norton
scans files after they are "run/looked at" rather that
before. Does it increase the change of getting a virus if
a file is scanned after rather than before? If not what
is the purpose of scanning before anyway?

Thanks

John

Hi John,

I see -- no, that's not what I meant.

Let me try rephrasing it -- with the 'MSN Messenger' option checked in Norton Antivirus,
Norton will scan files *immediately after you receive them*. With the option off, you *will
need to view/execute the file* which Norton *will then scan before* it actually is
viewed/executed (sorry about the asterik's, only way to make emphasis in text). So
regardless if you have the 'MSN Messenger' option on or off, Norton is still protecting every
single file running on your PC. Turning off the 'MSN Messenger' feature *will not* increase
your chances of getting a virus, you're still as protected as you were before.

Could someone tell me which Norton Antivirus .exe file to call for
scaning for viruses in MSN Messenger.

There are a few:
BOOTWARN.EXE
CFGWIZ.EXE
NAVAPSVC.EXE
NAVAPW32.EXE
NAVSTUB.EXE
NAVW32.EXE
NAVWNT.EXE
QCONSOLE.EXE
QSERVER.EXE

Which to put in the MSN Messenger settings?
