Problems with windows mail

My son just started college and can receive mail, but cannot send in his new
dorm.
Not sure what his error message said.

While trying to figure out his problem I started getting this error message:

Account: 'mail.bellsouth.net', Server: 'mail.bellsouth.net', Protocol:
POP3, Server Response: '-ERR authorization not enabled', Port: 110,
Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC18

I don't think I have changed anything so I am not sure where to start.

Any help is appreciated.

Go to Tools, Accounts, select that mail account, Properties, Servers.
Uncheck the box for "Log on using Secure Password Authentication."

That worked for me. Must have checked it while trying to help my son.

Any ideas as to what is going on down at his dorm?

LOL... you don't want to know.....

Since he's on the college network, he will have to use their email server.

As always, we'd need a complete copy of the error message your
son gets when attempting to send. Chances are, he is trying to use
an SMTP server that is not on the network providing his Internet
connection. Who is his mail provider, and who is his connection
provider?

Here is what he sent me.

Subject 'Read: Call your Mom', Account: 'mail.bellsouth.net', Server:
'mail.bellsouth.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Error
Number: 0x800CCC19

You did not answer the second part of my question, who is his connection
provider at the dorm? I'm guessing it is NOT Bellsouth. The reason why he
is having that problem is explained here:
http://www.postcastserver.com/help/Port_25_Blocking.aspx

As a general rule, the owner of the SMTP server must be the same as
the company providing the Internet connection.

The available workarounds for your son are as follows:

1. Use webmail for sending (via a browser).
2. Ask your home ISP if they have a port other than '25' for SMTP. I don't think
Bellsouth does.
3. Substitute the SMTP server belonging to your son's dorm connection.
4. Or, get a free Gmail account, configure it for POP access, and use it for
sending. Gmail uses port 465 for SMTP, which is not blocked like port 25 is.
