Problems with Windows Installer

Tried to load Norton Ghost today. About three quarters through a message
came up stating that the installation had been interrupted; it than
closed. Never could get Norton to work. When I attempted to reinstall; I
got the dreaded message that "The Windows Installer Service could not be
Accessed" Did a search on Google and this News Group. Tried John
Barnett's procedure to reinstall the Windows Installer. Didn't work.
Have the same problem. One other problem that popped up as a result of
this and is of great concern to me is that my Virus program "Trend
Micro" quite working at the same time. Problem now is that I can't
uninstall or re-install until I get the Windows Installer to work.
Sitting here with no virus protection. Not happy!!

Any suggestions?

There are a lot of articles in the MS Knowledge Base on this problem--maybe
one of them will help:

Thanks for your reply!
I have tried many of those suggestions and none have worked so far. Will
go through the complete list and try again.
My latest attempt was the installation of Windows Installer ver 4.5.
Didn't work.
I may have other issues. I notice that when I boot up; two icons will
appear in my task bar. They appear momentarily and than disappear. One
icon is for my virus program that I can't get to work and the other; I
believe is Microsoft Sync. Right after this occurs I get the following
error message "Common files\Roxio Shared\10.0\Sharedcom\Roxwatch.exe
terminated in an unusual way. Contact your system administrator"

Any thoughts?

Download, install, update, then run http://malwarebytes.org

If any part of that doesn't work, try it in Safe Mode. Once the malware
is removed, the utilities may work.

Like Elmo, I wonder if perhaps you have an infestation. You could also try
clean-boot troubleshooting and see if that reveals anything:

No virus! Have done three checks all negative. Hijackthis also indicated
nothing. It's my system. I have a week old back up that I just may have
to do. Didn't want to; but; me thinks I will!

Malwarebytes is one of my favorite programs. Check my system once a week
with it. As soon as I had this problem; I ran it; and it showed my
system as clean.
Tried another restore point yesterday with negative results. Will now
resort to the back up. Just need some time to do it. Have never run a
back up before; so I want to make sure I do it right!
