Problems with networking two XP pro pc's. My first home network

Hello everyone
Trying to set up my first home network.
I have two XP pro machines that I am trying to network
together using a small home use 100mb/s switch and pci
network carks also 100mb/s
I have run the network wizard on both machines with
one "hosting" internet connection i.e. the one with the
modem connected and the other to connect through the
other machine (if you can follow the above sentence you
are doing better than me)
I have checked the subnet mask and IP address on each
machine and subnet mask is identical and the IP address
are different only by the last set of digits. They are
also both using workgroup of the same name rather than a
domain.
Now for the problem (there just had to be one)
They do not talk to each other. In network places I can
see the icon for workgroup but when I select this to find
out if I can see each of the machines I get this message.
"Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource. Contact the
administrator of this server to find out if you have
access permissions. The list of servers for this
workgroup is not currently available.

Both machines are logged on as administrator...
Please help

had this problem a couple of weeks ago, have you made sure the firewall is disabled in xp pro also make sure you have no third party firewalls running like pccilin, i was also told to disable simple file sharing but i have kept it on and it works fine, also make sure you enable guest accounts on both pc's coz xp pro will not let you log on as your own identity. hope this helps if not post a reply and we'll try agai

Sorry but disabling the firewall just does not make any
sence to me. Why have it in the first place then....
I have Norton firewall running and have disabled the
native microsoft one.
Also not logging on as your own identity, this also does
not make sence. How am I to stop kids from getting into
web sites I do not want them to with no fire wall and no
logon accounts but a generic guest account.
Sorry but I am not about to give this a try......
Could I please have some more advise
Thanks.

Dear lost in space,
we all have the same problem, I've just posted an inquiry
(5/31) about the very same thing as you. And then started
to read previous messages, of which many describe the
same problem in variations. Hope Microsoft is following
these exchanges.....

Hi,
I to have the very same problem on 3 XP Pro, Virgin installations with no firewall settings. Go Figure? I have not been able to find any info on MS TechNet either. I have reinstalled all 3 at least 3 times each in the last week. So you are definetly not alone. I do not have these sort of problems running 2000. Upgrade anybody?
