Hi William,

There's an article on ATI's site which recommends updating drivers
if users of their products experience that error message.

Updating video card drivers can solve most gaming issues. Here's some
simple abc's to always keep in mind. a. Shut off download accelerators,
firewalls and antivirus programs when downloading or installing updates;
b. Check for game patches: www.avault.com/pcrl/patches_list.asp?letter=a
c. Make sure you meet the game's minimum video and system requirements.

Before you update your drivers, I recommend that you install DirectX 9.0b:
http://download.microsoft.com/downl...-4c98-baf3-0c67e7f3751f/dx90update_redist.exe

Here are the steps I recommend you use to update your driver:

1. To identify the make and model of your card, right click your
Desktop, choose Properties / Settings / Advanced / Adapter.

2. Download the latest video driver for your card online, using
http://www3.sympatico.ca/nibblesnbits/Video.html#drivers
to find the website to download from. I also have advanced
video driver and direct X troubleshooting steps on that page.

3. Save the .exe driver (or extract the zip file) to a folder
in My Documents named after the driver version number.

4. Restart the computer in Safe Mode by pressing the F8 key
about once every second as it's rebooting to pick Safe Mode.

5. Click Start / (settings) Control Panel / System / Hardware
Device Manager / expand +Display Adapters / right click on
the adapter, pick "Uninstall", and click No if asked to reboot.

6. Use Control Panel / Add-Remove programs to uninstall the
previous driver (exe)software which may have been installed.

7. Restart the computer in Safe Mode by pressing the F8 key
about once every second as it's rebooting to pick Safe Mode.

8. If the driver is NOT a (.exe)program file, GO TO step 11.

9. When Windows prompts you to install the video adapter, click
"Cancel" and Double click the driver program to begin installation.
* Even if not prompted, doubleclick the driver and install it.

10. After you reboot, go to Control Panel / Display / Settings and
choose 32 bit Color Quality, and 800x600 or higher Resolution.
That's it! Scroll down to the Troubleshooter if you have problems.

11. When Windows prompts you to install the video adapter, click
"Install from a list or specific location", click the "Browse" button,
browse to the My documents folder where you saved the driver,
and finally click on one of the driver files to begin installation.

** If you are not prompted, or if the driver was updated automatically:
Click Start / (settings) Control Panel / System / Hardware Device Manager
expand +Display Adapters / right click on the adapter, pick "Update Driver"
to start the Update Wizard, choose the "Install from a list..." option:
Browse to My Documents\ folder with the driver in it
Click OK and click Next to begin the update.

12. After you reboot, go to Control Panel / Display / Settings and
choose 32 bit Color Quality, and 800x600 or higher Resolution.
That's it! Try the advice in the Troubleshooter if you have problems.

TROUBLESHOOTING:

Test your drivers using DXDiag: Click Start / Run / type: DXDIAG
Click the "Test" buttons in the Display, Sound, Music & Network Tabs;
If any of the Display options are Disabled and you cannot Enable them,
your most likely solution would be to update your Chipset Drivers as per
my website: http://www3.sympatico.ca/nibblesnbits/Video.html#v11

Your program might not support dual monitors, or "dual head" video cards
You can disable the extra video output in your display properties control
panel. Click Start>Settings>Control Panel>Display>Settings>Advanced.

Along with your Video card, Sound Cards, Motherboard Chipsets,
and Video Monitors may also require updated drivers. Even your
motherboard's BIOS may need to be updated for compatibility with
your Video card. These steps are listed at: http://NibblesNbitsVideo.tk

Perhaps the old Video drivers did not completely uninstall. If that's the
case, use these utility to completely uninstall the drivers and go to step 7:
nvidia: http://content.guru3d.com/index.php?page=detonatorrip&menu=0
or for all cards including nvidia use: http://www.driverheaven.net/cleaner/

The latest video drivers sometime don't work with a particular game.
(Check the Video suggestions in the readme.txt file in your game folder/CD)
If there's no suggestions, try an older (WHQL) driver, and/or if you still
experience problems try a Beta driver, or even an Omega driver instead:

BETA Drivers: http://download.guru3d.com/
OMEGA Drivers: http://www.omegacorner.com/

There you have it, if you have any questions feel free to post them! :)

I would say that it's not spyware because the error report program is
in the same format as the windows XP one. It has a "click here to send
an error report" button and then it goes through the three parts and
ticks them off as it goes.

However, I have a problem where my Radeon 9600 Pro hangs up, the
monitor gets no signal (can still hear sound from the built in speakers
though), and then after a while the system comes back up telling me the
VPU stopped responding and VPU recover has reset it.

This only happens while running 3D applications (although not
necessarily directX - I've had the error while running Counter Strike
in OpenGL, and also while running Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 in Direct3D),
and always starts up the internet connection wizard. It's a very strange
thing to happen, and if it weren't for that I would assume it was a
hardware problem and would take the graphics card back to the shop.

The problem only started either 2 or 3 days ago, so I am still sticking
it out to see if I find a solution and/or the problem stops.

Rather annoying thing to happen. Happened first while I was right in
the middle of a round on CS =\

Have you tried to remove the drivers completely and re-install them? I have
encountered this before but on a different make of video card.

Since you mentioned something about 3D graphics and running games in Open GL,
It thought I could mentioned to you the issue I am having. I just purchased a
new AMD Athlon(tm) XP 3200+. The video card is GEForce FX 5200. Everytime I
play a game, such as Medal of Honor (any of them) I keep getting an error
message mentioning it cannot open the GL file. Or cannot find the GL file.
These cames have always played on my older Gateway computer. Do you have any
idea what this could be?

Hi Gnee,

That error usually indicates that you need to update your video drivers.

I thought I did update the drivers but I will try what you have suggested. I
think I need to uninstall all the driver information that I have downloaded
and start all over. I think I have installed several drivers. One was 9.0
with GL setup. That one seemed to be the one I needed. Thanks. This is a
great site that I have found.

I Have this
card. Honestly, its not your sound card or
drivers with the problem. Its the AGP to CPU controller. If
you don't have the AGP version of this sound card, like me,
then Windows is using IRQ steering to provide it with a
channel to talk to your processor. If you have an upgraded
sound card, then this is being shared with the Video card.
#1 Flaw with xp. I can't even map a DMA channel to my sound
card under XP.. which brings me here. Yet lets take care
of your issue first.

If you have a AMD processor head on over to ViaArena.com.
There very first update under thier downloads section is
the 4 n 1 driver. Get that driver and install it. If it is
a PCI card and you have a integrated video device, then
disable the AGP control. It is found here:

Start > R-click my computer > manage > device manager >
System > AGP Controller.

If you have an intell system then you have to download and
install thier chipset utility. Then you can use that
utility to figure out what motherboard chipset you have and
then find the Graphics controller on thier site. Be wary,
it sounds like you have an older system. If you have a P3,
chances are you wont be able to get this a new graphics
controller at all. Don't start downloading stuf at random
from this site, just because you might have similar
products in your device manager doesn't mean that intel's
updates will work. Everything but the graphics controller
will not work on any other boards than intell ones. aka if
u have an intell processor on a HP pc, don't DL thier IDE
Controller.. I did that once and had to re-install my OS.

I rescently upgraded my gforce 3 to a gforce fx 5200 256
mb vram card. ok i installed it with no problems. i go to
install my drivers and all hell breaks loose. i got a
weird error like device can't start. so i get the most
updated drivers and my comp constantly crashes. so i find
some out dated drivers and that stabalized my comp. but
now i can't run games, the comp crashes when any graphics
start.

SOMEBODY HELP ME!!!!!!
I am open to any and all suggestions

Hi Gnee,

That is possible, however the native drivers already installed
for your *chipset* might be sufficient. Your best bet is to
install the video drivers first, and then if necessary update
the chipset drivers using the steps in my video troubleshooter.
