Problems w/ MS Anti-Spyware beta

W

WindyLady

.. I have encountered several disturbing problems ever
since I installed this betaware:
1) I no longer have a fireware even though I know my
eMachine came with one installed and running. MS can't
seem to turn it back on nor even find it!
2) Though I used to have freeze-ups less than once a
month, now I have freeze-ups every night, sometimes more
than once!
3) Supposedly it's cleaned out all of the spyware known
as Miracle Search Bar, yet every time I reboot, it has to
reclean it again!
4) I have to keep re-installing my Google Toolbar....
4) AND I'm getting pop-up up the kazoo, too!!!
.. Can somebody out there help me, PLEASE?!?!?!

Boot into Safe Mode (F8) at startup;
Empty your temporary files AND your Temporary Internet Files* C:\Documents
and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files folder ;
Run the scan while in safe mode;
If you are running SP2, open IE--->Tools--->Manage Add-ons, and uncheck any
BHO's that you don't recognize.

*The .tif are Temporary Internet Files, and are stored in a different barn
than 'normal' temp files.
Here's how I kludge thru to them: Open Windows Explorer--->C:\Documents and
Settings. Then it's to the Tool Bar--->Folder Options--->View--->Hidden
Files and Folders and check the box "Show hidden files and folders" > Now
expand C:\Documents and Settings and under each user you will now see a
folder "Local Settings". Open that puppy and choose Temporary Internet
Files. I am not concerned about the cookies therein, but everything else
can go for now.

The other replies have given good suggestions to your general problems about
removing resistant spyware--do it in safe mode, with full, deep scans.

I'm concerned about the firewall problem--this is much more important than
any spyware.

See this KB article for a fix:

If you are on XP, but not yet on Service Pack 2, or if you are on Windows
2000, the third-party application at this link may be easier to use:
