Problems running old games on windows xp

P

Psymaster

I have some games which are old (kampfgruppe, panzer general
etc.) and used to run them under DOS and win98, and I can now
run them only under safe mode in winxp. I used to run them
under normal startup too but it's no longer possible. If i start
windows normally the game just pops it startup/title screen and
gets stuck there, I have to alt-tab out of it to close it. I
have tried ending all the processes in task manager that run
under my username but still no luck.

Any suggestions?

Hi Psymaster,

When a game is a DOS game, it could work using compatibility mode:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=292533 or by using the Multiboot
bootdisk from: http://members.ozemail.com.au/~lpcd/downloads.html
and always check at fileplanet.com to see if there's a patch available.

With DOSBOX you can emulate a DOS computer on your XP desktop:
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/information.php

If you prefer to explore other advanced methods, here are two excellent
tutorials I've found on the subject: http://www.dosgames.com/xphints.php
and: http://home.earthlink.net/~angeldancer27/XpGameList.htm :)

If I remember correctly, I installed Panzer General using
compatibility mode and I ran a couple of scenarios to make
sure it was working, but haven't touched it since. It
sounds to me as if you have done some sort of an update to
your system that is causing this, so you may want to try
restoring to a point that you know everything was right.

1.)set game as desktop icon
2.)right click, properties
3.)click compatibility tab
4.)change it
