Problems reinstalling IE 6

Jamie

I recently had to uninstall IE because it got hijacked by
some spyware. I removed it using the "remove Windows
components" bit of the Control Panel. However, it left
behind a programme called Q831167. I then installed
something called "Smart Explorer" (I'm not sure how), which
I don't like and won't let me use webmail properly, so I
want to reinstall IE 6. However, every time I try and run
the installer it says there's a more recent version of IE
already on the system. I've removed Smart Explorer, so it
can't be that, and I've definitely got the latest IE
download. I've tried removing Q831167, but then my computer
refuses to connect to the internet at all. Can anybody help?

Hi Jamie :)

Try here and see if this helps;
http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/ReInIE.htm

Also, please read the following:
*************************************
What do I need to do before installing IE or any other programme?

The most important thing to remember, is to disable your virus scanner. Do
a power off reboot. Use ctrl/alt/del to shut down everything except for
Explorer and Systray.

Also, you MUST disable *all* Norton products, especially crashguards, disc
utilities etc etc.

Now it is safe to start IE, download and install IE.

The same procedure should be followed before installing any programme. If a
file is being used by a background process during an install, it will not be
replaced or updated, even if its replacement is essential to the successful
operation of the programme being installed.

Hope this helps.

Jan :)
