Problems installing Canon N670u driver

I'm in the process of updating everything on my PC, so I've downloaded
the various drivers for each device, but I'm having trouble with the
Canon N-670u scanner...

I understand that what I need is a package called "ScanGear CS", so I
looked up the N670u on some Canon website and downloaded the latest
version.
While I was there I also downloaded a utility for removing the scanner
driver if needed, and "CanoScan Toolbox" which I believe is some sort of
utility (I'm not really sure what it is -someone enlighten me please),
but I was under the impression that I needed it.

Well, upon running the ScanGear CS ".exe" file it just seems to copy
files over to somewhere on my drive. No menu, nothing to click or
anything. It doesn't even tell me when I'm done, but waiting a while
after the progress dialogs I feel it's safe to do a reboot, so I do
that, but no matter what I do, the scanner still has a yellow "?" next
to it in the device manager in the "System" control panel.

What am I doing wrong?
The PC runs Windows ME, and I'm sure I downloaded the correct driver for
my operating system.

Is the USB working correctly, have you gone to Microsoft Update after
installing the new Windows ME?

First disconnect the Canon N670U scanner from USB. It must not be connected
before the software is fully installed.

Run the utility for removing the scanner driver. Reboot afterwards, you need
a clean start.

The correct location for Canon N670U Driver and Manuals.

Is this the driver you downloaded?
CanoScan N670U Scanner Driver ScanGear CS Ver. 7.0.3.0 for Windows Me

If so that is the correct TWAIN driver for the Canon N670U and Windows Me.

If you downloaded the wrong driver for your computer, you need to get the
correct driver for Windows ME.

Did you read the instructions? Copy of them below:

CanoScan N670U Scanner Driver ScanGear CS Ver. 7.0.3.0 for Windows Me
- Driver and application software files have been compressed.
The following instructions show you how to download the compressed
files and decompress them.

1. To download files, click the file link, select [Save], and specify
the directory where you want to save the file. The download will start
automatically.
2. Downloaded files are saved in the specified folder in a
self-extracting form (.exe format).
3. If double-click the files to decompress them, a new folder will be
created in the same folder.
New folder has the same name with the decompressed file.
4. Double-click the decompressed Setup.exe file. to start
installation.

Translation of what the instructions mean. I speak and write English as my
primary language. The original writer of the above instructions has English
as their second or third language.

Where did you download SGCS7030WNEN.EXE to on your hard drive?
With Windows Explorer, look in that location and you will find
SGCS7030WNEN.EXE, Double click SGCS7030WNEN.EXE and a folder named
SGCS7030WNEN will appear.

Change to the folder SGCS7030WNEN and you will see two files, README.TXT and
SETUPSG.EXE. SETUPSG.EXE is the setup.exe that is referred to in the above
instructions. (It just has a different name.) It stands for Setup Scan Gear.

You should delete the yellow "?" marked scanner in Device manager before
double clicking SETUPSG.EXE.

Double click SETUPSG.EXE and the setup and install process will begin.
