Problems downloading Defender

This *might* by an XPSP3 problem OR I have something borked up on my PC.
Ever since I installed SP3, I have not been able to download Defender.
Windows Genuine Advantage doesn't want to work right either, but after it
finally does, then all I get is a blank white screen instead of the Defender
download. I have put all MSFT and MSN sites in the IE7 trusted zone and set
everthing to default, but to no avail. The only way I have been able to
install Defender is from an old backup CD.
I'm not actually needing to use Defender right now, because I have KIS 2009
installed, but I'm perplexed why I can't download it. No problems whatsoever
downloading Windows Updates or new MSN Explorer 9.6 dialup software, or any
other software. Is this happening to other folks?

Hmm--are you able to go to Windows Update and do a full scan (whatever the
one is called that is not express!) and download stuff from there that
requires WGA?

This sounds like a WGA issue to me, but I've no immediate idea what the
answer might be--seems to me there's a WGA page where you can test it out
manually--that might be a way to get this straigtened out.

You might try this:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...77-cfa1-47bd-b325-7a6d3893add8&displaylang=en

Or, try the buttons in the upper right area of this page:

http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/de...en&sGuid=e90011b8-48cb-4e6e-9dca-4505ab6a73cd

See if they knock some sense into WGA...

Thanks, Bill. The problem - whatever caused it- seems to have been fixed
when I reverted to an older Acronis image of the OS because of another AV
related problem. I have had no problems downloading Defender since I restored
to the earlier image - except for incredibly slow download speeds on MSN
dialup, which seem to be getting worse. Arggg! ;)

I had some major "slow" issues trying to download from two Microsoft
sites--the security portal and the download center--last night between
10:30pm and 12:30 AM or so. It cleared up, and I blamed it on Comcast--I
was working remotely on a laptop in the 'burbs, which connected to the
Internet via Comcast.

Come to think of it--it really wasn't Microsoft--because I downloaded one of
the files at home at full speed during that time period--it was going to be
quicker to move it from home to the other remote machine, even with DSL
differentials--than to try to get it direct from Microsoft.

As I recall MSN dialup, it is a shared network--you are dialing into a big
nationwide carrier--that's why when you connect using dial up networking you
have to use a syntax including /msn or is it \msn--I can never remember!

Well, 'misery loves company' and I take some comfort in hearing that even
broadband users have download problems. Of course with dialup, I never know
if it's the weather related problems, heavy phone line usage, or MSFT
servers. I thought I had a slowly failing modem, but I think I've ruled that
out because it works just fine until I start installing security software.
MSN dialup uses Level3 Communications, at least in this area. Manual DUN
requires MSN1 and MSN/*****(user id) plus password, of course. On good days I
can get 49.296 Kbps, but not lately. DSL and cable are not available. I'm
debating whether the cost of Verison wireless might finally be worth it.
Definitely - IF I ever get a Vista machine.

I've a friend in a similar situation. He was going to try out Verizon
Wireless, but he has a new laptop with the new type of slot, and they gave
him a cardbus card on a 30 day trial, and he came to me to ask why it didn't
fit in properly!

So, I never found out whether it worked well for him or not.

The 30 day trial makes it fairly easy to see whether it'll work in your
intended location(s).

I still use dialup occasionally--at my parent's house, and the occasional
client who doesn't have broadband and has no nearby neighbor with an
unencrypted connection...

And, of course, to dial directly into a server when the Internet connection
has failed and I need to know how bad the situation really is...,.
